Hadrian Buckley sent me into the mountain to straighten me out.
He had no idea it was a high-radiation zone.
Five months later, he showed up with a team to get me. My skin had already begun to rot.
"Letitia Mundt," he said, "if you hadn't pushed Zee out the window, I wouldn't have done that.
"Have you learned your lesson?"
I sank to my knees, ready to apologize to Zelda Crawford.
Hadrian froze, then instinctively reached down.
"It's okay. You don't need to kneel."
I didn't answer. I watched his hand close around my arm.
He didn't know months out here had soaked me in radiation.

For five months, I survived on worms, insects, and even rotting carcasses.
Next to Zelda, I was ragged and miserable, like I'd just crawled out of a dumpster.
Zelda was his secretary. Bringing me food had been her job.
When Hadrian glanced at her, she bit her lip like she'd been wronged.
"Tisha, I know you don't like me, but you can't just throw accusations around because you're upset Harry sent you away.
"I picked out your food every week. I even kept the receipts."
She pulled out a stack of printed records—different lists every week.
Then she spoke lightly, like she wasn't trying to cast me as a schemer.
"Tisha, are you starving yourself so Harry will feel bad for you?
"He won't get mad. Just eat the food you've been hiding. Your health matters more."
Hadrian shot me a hard look.
He hated scheming, manipulative women. His hand pulled away, and I hit the ground.
I hadn't eaten since everything edible around here ran out, whether plant or animal.
And radiation had hollowed me out.
That fall drained the last of my strength. I couldn't get up.
Hadrian frowned.
"Enough. Stop pretending. Get up."
Zelda covered her mouth with a small laugh.
"Come on, Tisha. Didn't you say women should be strong?"
A guy from the team couldn't watch it anymore and stepped forward.
As he crouched to help me, Zelda let out another muffled laugh.
"Look at you, our beauty queen. Total mess, and guys still want to play hero. I'm jealous."
Three years ago, I was the Mundt heiress everyone adored.
Hadrian chased me with everything he had, and I fell for him completely.
After we married, he came home on time every night, no matter how busy he was.
He brought me rare gifts just to see me smile. For my birthday, he lit up the whole city with fireworks.
Then Zelda came back, and it all fell apart.
He'd always kept work and home separate, until he hired her as his secretary on a hefty salary. One call from her, and he'd vanish for the night.
I cried and fought with him. I tried everything to make him understand how much it hurt and how much I cared.
All I did was push him further away.
He grew tired of me.
Then my family went bankrupt. My parents stepped onto the tracks and never came back.
I made it home, only to find Zelda in lace lingerie in my bedroom.
Hadrian stood in front of her, his shirt half undone.
I snapped and pushed her.
It was a light touch, yet she still tumbled out the second‑floor window.
The next day, Hadrian dumped me into the mountain.
Five months passed with me on my own.
Now he stood over me, eyes cold, voice mocking.
