Figurative flower and bird painting - Bird painting techniques

A. The structure of birds:
Despite the significant differences in bird species, their growth patterns are consistent. Therefore, before depicting birds, one should first understand the structure of their bones and the growth patterns of their feathers. Only by familiarizing oneself with the various structural relationships can one depict a vivid image.

B. Sketching the outline.
Use different shades of ink to sketch the black-and-white draft. The lines should be both solid and hazy. The flight feathers on the wings and the individual feathers on the back should be outlined with solid lines, while the down feathers on the abdomen and tail should be outlined with hazy lines. When sketching, pay attention to the dynamic and structure of the birds, and ensure that every detail is accurately depicted to create a lifelike image.
C. Light color base layering.
Use light ink (preferably light rather than dark) to evenly spread a layer on the bodies of the cockatoo and swan goose. After it dries, use light ink to outline the joints where feathers meet feathers and from the tips to the roots to color them, creating the general gradations of light and dark; use a light mixture of vine green and cinnabar mixed with ink to evenly spread on the white heron, and after it dries, use white powder to color from the tip (the prominent part of the form structure) to the root (the concave part of the form structure) in sections.

D. Layered gradation coloring.
Use light ink to color the black feathers. When coloring, pay attention to using light ink rather than dark ink, and do not stop coloring too soon. Only by layering and covering layer by layer can a saturated and ink-rich effect be achieved. Similarly, the white on the heron should also be colored layer by layer. Use cinnabar to lightly spread a layer on the feet and beak of the cockatoo; use light ink to color in sections on the footpaws of the heron to create a scaly appearance.
Note: Layered coloring is a method of using transparent or semi-transparent colors (ink) to color or spread evenly on the base color. The characteristic of layering coloring is that colors blend and complement each other. This method can achieve a saturated and rich color effect.
E. In-depth detailing.
When the desired layer and gradation effect is reached, use a line drawing pen to outline the details of the feathers. Use white powder to color the footpaws of the cockatoo in sections, and color the white on the beak and eyes. Use a light mixture of orange yellow to gently spread a layer on the tail and tip of the wings of the cockatoo, then use ultramarine blue to gently spread from the head to the back, abdomen, wings, and tail, making it shine with a bluish light. Use a light mixture of white powder to gently spread on the prominent parts of the white feathers of the heron to the concave parts, making the whole unified. Use a light mixture of ultramarine blue to spread on the footpaws and beak of the heron, and finally add the finishing touch.
