I Deserved Better Than Your Love Chapter 01

Three years ago, Nicole Hadley—the radiant, free-spirited president of the International Dance Council—lost her leg in a car accident.
Everyone expected her to fall into despair. Instead, she remained as vibrant as ever, even developing a passion for skydiving and mountaineering.
The most enviable part was her marriage. Her husband, Ruben Faber—a perfectionist and famously aloof CEO—continued to dote on her just as he always had.
Despite his fear of heights, he insisted on accompanying her on every skydiving jump and mountain climb.
After the accident, Nicole was left infertile. When Ruben's family pressured him to produce an heir, he cut off all contact with them, publicly declaring that he and Nicole were childfree by choice.
So even though the car crash had left Ruben with severe PTSD—rendering him impotent—and Nicole had lost both a leg and the child she carried, she still believed they had a happy marriage.
That belief shattered the day she received a call from Ruben's close friend, Lamar Branson.
"Nikki, Ben ran someone over in the city south. The injured girl has Rh-negative blood just like you, and she's bleeding out. You need to get to the central hospital and donate blood, now."
A car accident in the south?
They lived on the north side. But Nicole loved the pastries from the south, and every day, Ruben would spend hours lining up just to buy them for her.
He must have gone there for her desserts again.
Nicole rushed to the hospital.
When she arrived, Lamar told her Ruben had suffered only minor scrapes and was still undergoing examinations. Only then did Nicole finally breathe a sigh of relief.
In the blood collection room, she donated 800 milliliters of blood. Her face drained of color, and she nearly fainted.
Lamar's eyes softened with sympathy as he handed her several documents.
"Nikki, these are Ben's medical bills. They need your signature."
Nicole, weak and shaky, took the pen and signed without reading.
Lamar gathered up the paperwork.
"Rest here. I'll go get Ben's test results."
The moment he left, Nicole noticed that Ruben's patient card had been left behind. She wheeled herself out in a hurry to return it.
At the stairwell, just as she was about to call out, Lamar's voice stopped her cold.
"Here—she's signed everything. If anyone finds out I tricked someone into signing divorce papers, my law career is over."
Nicole froze. Before she could even process what she'd heard, Ruben's calm, detached voice followed.
"Cait is pregnant. I promised to marry her, so I have to divorce Nikki for now. I couldn't bear watching Nikki have her blood drawn. So I had to turn to you."
