The Day I Chose Me Chapter 01
When I was five, Julian Blackwood and I were kidnapped together.
When they were about to give him an injection, I stepped in front of him and took the drug that damage my mind.
Back then, his parents said I was bound to marry him someday.
Later, he went far away for college and brought back a beautiful girl named Victoria Vance.
Everyone said I was a little fool, no match for him now.
Julian also said the childhood engagement meant nothing to him anymore.
I understood that he didn't want me anymore.
Feeling suffocated, I walked to my dad's grave, where I ran into a mischievous boy.
He asked me, "Want to come with me?"
I said, "Okay."
But later, Julian went crazy.
***
"If I drink all this, will you marry me, Julian?"
He sat in the shadows. I couldn't see his expression, but I knew his features were handsome.
He was flicking a lighter in his hand, and I knew he was about to get angry.
I hurriedly poured a bottle into my mouth. The burn stung my throat, and I coughed violently.
Everyone in the private room laughed.
"Julian, after all these years, shouldn't you marry the little fool?"
"Yeah, you have to admit, the little fool is getting prettier."
"If you don't want her, don't let the rest of us miss our chance."
Julian's eyes turned cold, and they instantly shut up.
"You like her?" he asked a guy nearby.
The guy quickly waved his hands. "Just kidding around! Who'd actually marry a fool?"
No one would want me except Julian. Ever since the incident in my childhood, I've been terrified of being alone in the dark. I couldn't bear it.
Ignoring the pain, I kept drinking. It felt like my insides were on fire.
I don't know how much I drank. Visions of Julian Blackwoods started swimming before my eyes.
He was angry. "Enough."
The beautiful college student he brought back, Victoria, held my hand down. "Stop. Even if you drink it all, Julian won't marry you."
I looked at her in surprise.
She continued, "Can't you see? Julian doesn't like you at all."
He... doesn't like me?
I looked at Julian blankly.
But before, when all the other kids hated me and wouldn't play with me, only he was willing to. He said he would never hate me.
"Have you always hated me, Julian?" I bit my lip until it bled, fighting back the urge to cry. Because he didn't like it when I cried.
Someone in the room jeered. "The little fool is gonna cry again. Mr. Blackwood, hurry up and comfort your bride."
He stood up and smacked the guy with his suit jacket. "What bride? That's nonsense!"
After saying that, Julian walked out of the room. As he left, he took Victoria's hand.
My chest ached with a dull pain, and I followed dizzily behind him.
When we got to the hotel entrance, Julian said it wasn't on the way. He needed to take her back to her hotel first and told me to wait by the door.
I waited for a long time, and I became gradually sober.
Withered yellow leaves fell from the trees in front of me, and I tore them into tiny pieces. Julian used to say that once I finished counting, he would appear.
This time, I shredded pile after pile of leaves until the ground was littered with fragments. My hands grew numb from the cold, but he never showed up.
Until dawn broke, and even with the sun shining on me, I still felt cold.
In the end, I walked home alone.
