‘Make America Go Away’—MAGA Spoof Hats Are A Hot Iteme

When Trump renewed his push to acquire Greenland, Danish and Greenlandic communities responded with parody MAGA hats, Inuit art and mass protests defending sovereignty and cultural identity.

‘Make America Go Away’—MAGA Spoof Hats Are A Hot Iteme

When U.S. President Donald Trump doubled down on pressure to acquire Greenland, the political backlash was immediate, but so was the creative and cultural one. Like the “No Kings” marches in the U.S., Danish and Greenlandic communities have staged “Hands off Greenland” protests. The creative response includes satire, slogans, signs, cultural heritage symbols and inventive protest clothing.

The most ubiquitous protest symbol is a parody of red “Make America Great Again” hats, using the slogan, “Make America Go Away”—designed by Copenhagen shop owner Jesper Rabe Tonnesen. Another slogan emblazoned on caps: “Nu det NUUK,” a pun on the Danish phrase, “Now it’s Enough” (Nu det nok). Nuuk is the capital of Greenland.

Greenland Support, a charity formed to protect Greenland’s culture from foreign influence, sells red, white and black “Nu det NUUK!” caps, red “Make America Go Away” caps, and green “NOT FOR SALE!” caps imprinted with Greenland’s flag, all for $48. Other merchandise includes T-shirts printed with the Greenland flag paired with messages of support, as well as a T-shirt emblazoned with a raised fist that encompasses the Greenland’s flag.

Proceeds from the sales go to a charity that supports Greenlandic children, and the Red House Greenland Foundation that protects Inuit cultural heritage.
