No Longer Deceive Myself That You Love Me Chapter 01

“I’m so done with Madilynn. She’s nothing but a burden. Honestly, I wish she had died in that earthquake when she was ten, so she couldn’t continue to be a problem.
“Can you believe she tried to compete with you for the heart? What a schemer!”
Jettson didn’t even try to hide the disgust on his face.
My sister, Melissa Baughen, snuggled up against his chest and grinned triumphantly. “If Madilynn hears this, she’ll come after me again.”
Jettson’s expression turned icy, and his tone filled with disdain as he replied, “She won’t dare!
“So what if she finds out? We’ve been kind enough to take care of her all these years. A loser like her should be grateful! If she had any sense at all, she’d just disappear.”
I froze in place.
A sharp pain pierced my chest, stealing my breath for a moment.
Had I not stumbled upon this today, I would have gone to my grave without ever knowing that chilling truth.
I bit down on my pale lower lip, wanting to–rush over–and ask why they’d treated me like that.
But when my gaze fell on the critical condition notice in my hand, I suddenly smiled.
When I saved Jettson ten years ago, I never expected him to repay me with marriage.
If I’d known all this earlier, I wouldn’t have risked my life to have his child.
And I definitely wouldn’t have kept telling myself over and over again that he loved me.
But none of that mattered anymore.
After all, I was dying.
Melissa swayed a bit.
Panic and worry flashed across Jettson’s face, and without thinking twice, he scooped her rushed her back to the ward.
I trailed behind them and saw my parents hurriedly grab the doctor. “Doctor, my daughter isn’t feeling well again! Can you check on her?”
The doctor said she was fine, and the three of them finally let out a sigh of relief.
Only then did they notice me pressed in the corner.
Jettson shot a cold glance at the report I was holding and asked, “What did the doctor say?”
I gave a faint smile and replied, “Everything’s good.”
For the first time, Jettson explained himself, “Things were really urgent back then. Missy couldn’t wait any longer. And I couldn’t just stand by and watch her die.”
My mom hesitantly asked, “Madilynn, you’re not going to be mad at us, are you?”
When I didn’t respond, she snapped at me. “Madilynn, you are so heartless! Missy’s your sister!”
My dad also turned his anger on me. “Enough already! Ever since you got back, this family hasn’t had a moment’s peace. You’ve been fighting with Missy over everything. And now it’s her life! Can you stop this already?”
My five–year–old son, Oliver Ackrigg, was furious, too. He slammed his head into my stomach and kept hitting me with his tiny fists. “Bad woman! It’s all because of you that Melissa ended up in the hospital! I don’t want a bad mom like you. I want Melissa to be my mom!”
Their harsh words cut into me like shards of ice.
I stumbled back and bit my lip hard to steady myself through the pain.
Once they were done letting it all out, I gently shook my head.
“I’m not mad. The doctor said we’ll hear some good news in seven days.”
I paused for a moment. My voice came out hoarse. “And it will be good for all of us.”
