After my private photos were leaked by my boyfriend, a Major General in the military, I secretly processed my discharge papers and applied for an overseas support assignment, telling no one.
I saw Lucas Vance again at a veterans’ reunion ten years later.
All our friends were married with children by then. Only Lucas had remained single after our breakup.
“Jessica, Lucas must be waiting for you!” they said. “He hasn’t been with anyone all these years, never married.”
The words were barely out of their mouths when Lucas walked in.
Impeccable in his dress uniform, he commanded the room the moment he appeared.
A decade had done little to diminish his striking features, though the sharp edges of youth had softened into a bearing of seasoned authority.
Knowing our history, they deliberately seated us together.
I felt his covert glances, sensed the unspoken words hovering between us, all of which finally condensed into a quiet, “Jessica, it’s been a long time.”
“Yes, it has,” I replied flatly, my face a mask of indifference, devoid of any emotion befitting such a reunion.
I remembered the eve of the Special Forces selection exams, when those private photos exploded across the internet.
Overnight, my reputation was in ruins, my qualification revoked.
And every one of those photos… Lucas had coaxed and wheedled me into taking them.

Shattered, I ran to confront him. But as I reached for the door, I overheard a bombshell.
“Damn, Lucas, that was cold! Leaking those photos totally destroyed Jessica’s reputation. Served her right for trying to steal Isabella’s spot.”
Another voice chimed in, “Yeah, but imagine if she knew Lucas never even liked her these past three years? That he was so disgusted by her he pawned her off on his twin for all the nighttime action? Now that would break her. Haha!”
Their words detonated in my ears like thunder.
The speaker nudged the young man beside Lucas with his elbow. “Hey, Liam, how was it, secretly banging your brother’s girlfriend for three years?”
The young man called Liam Vance was the spitting image of Lucas. He picked up his glass, a leer on his face.
“Top shelf. Creamy skin, tiny waist, sounds like a kitten when she moans.”
He smirked, “I’m transferring to Capitol Command. Makes it easier to keep tapping that.”
Then Lucas, silent until now, spoke. Each word was a bullet, tearing through me.
“Get it out of your system now. Once Isabella secures the selection slot, I’m dumping her and making my move on Isabella.”
The others whooped. “About time, Lucas! We all know how you feel about Isabella! You’ve protected her like a treasure since we were kids! Even dated the girl most likely to steal her spot… Jessica Gray… just to clear the way! You hould’ve sealed the deal with Isabella ages ago!”
Every syllable was a sledgehammer to my chest. My body turned to ice, blood freezing in my veins.
All his affection had been a lie. The truth was this ugly, this cruel.
I spun around and fled, my retreat a humiliating scramble.
My phone rang sharply.
My father’s voice roared, furious, “Jessica Gray! What the hell are those pictures online? The General’s office called the house! You’ve disgraced us! I pulled strings for an international aid post. Get your ass on a plane out of here! Don’t you dare come back until this mess is forgotten!”
My heart plunged into an abyss. Numbly, I answered, “Fine. I’ll go. But I am never coming back.”
