Goodbye My Cruel Family Chapter 01

The day I knew I was the true heiress of the Nguyen family, Stephanie Nguyen, the fake heiress who’d bullied me, ran away and got hit by a car.
Mom and Dad made me kneel before the priest every day to repent.
I endured this torment for three whole years.
It wasn’t until yesterday that I learned the truth: Stephanie had only faked her death.
Mom, Dad, they all knew this.
It was just a test to see if I’d bully Stephanie later.
I wiped blood from my split lip and suddenly laugh.
They needn’t have worried.
How could a dying girl replace Stephanie?
……
I huddled in the storage room, shoving the blood-soaked tissue into a corner.
The door creaked open, and my older brother Mark Nguyen walked in, frosty eyes raking over me.
Pure contempt darkens his face:
“Catherine Robinson, confession hour’s over. Do I have to escort you there?”
I slowly lifted my head to look at him.
The first time I met him three years ago, he slapped me across the face. It was him who deafened me.
I used to beg him to spare me, but now I can’t even muster the strength to plead anymore.
“Brother,” my voice came out hoarse and grating, thick with the metallic taste of blood in my throat,
“Is Stephanie really dead?
If she is, why have you never let me visit her grave?”
Mark’s expression froze momentarily before twisting into a cold sneer:
“Your words drove her away and got her killed in that accident.Every bit of suffering you’re going through now is what you deserve.”
“Making you confess before the priest? That’s only to keep you from defiling the ground where my sister rests!”
The pain racking my body paled against the stabbing agony in my heart.
I blurted out with impulse:
“Brother, I know Stephanie isn’t dead. I saw her…”
“All these years, she’s been bullying me at school. Ask anyone there if you don’t believe me—”
Before I could finish, he viciously yanked my hair upward.
I cried out in pain, but Mark didn’t loosen his grip.
He dragged me straight to the church outside the villa, forcing me to kneel before the priest:
“Catherine, who gave you the guts to slander my sister?
Three years later, are you still delusional about sending her away and taking her place?”
“Since you haven’t learned your lesson, you’ll kneel here confessing until you do!”
Mark dragged me like a dog, slamming my forehead against the floor.
“Cat got your tongue?
Speak!”
Trembling from head to toe, I choked out the same words as always:
“I am guilty!”
“I should’t have coveted everything that belonged to Stephanie!”
“I shouldn’t have deluded myself into replacing her or driving her to her death! I’m guilty—I repent!”
Mark smashed my head against the floor ten times—once for each forced confession.
Only then did he release me with disgust.
“Your filthy hair is all over my hands. Disgusting!
Did our family ever mistreat you?
Can’t even bother to wash your hair?”
I knelt on the floor, struggling to breathe.
Blood surged up my throat—I couldn’t hold back. Vomit and nosebleed gushed out simultaneously.
It was only then that panic and confusion flickered across Mark’s face:
“Hey!
Why so much blood?
Catherine!”
His voice faded as darkness swallowed my vision.
When I woke, I lay in an unfamiliar room.
Mark stood nearby, frowning down at me:
“Why didn’t you say you were unwell?
Stephanie couldn’t sleep worrying after seeing you vomit blood.”
“You were right—she isn’t dead. This was merely a test.”
“Since you’ve been obedient these three years, you’ve passed… for now.”
“This is your room. When Stephanie’s home, stay out of her sight.”
Dizziness washed over me, and complete despair settled in my heart.
I’d thought becoming the Nguyens’ real daughter would end my suffering.
Instead, I’d entered a deeper hell.
The person who replaced me was Stephanie—the very girl who’d bullied me at school.
She lied, claiming I’d forced her from the family before she’d run out in a state of shock and been hit by a car.
My parents and Mark came to loathe me, making me kneel before that priest for three whole years.
Until yesterday, I secretly saw my parents talking with Stephanie while she was dressed as a priest.
They mentioned me during their conversation:
“Catherine’s been obedient all these years. Maybe we shouldn’t have Stephanie play priest to make her confess?”
But Mark dismissed the idea:
“Stephanie was in a coma for five days. We agreed to test her for five years—not a single day less.”
“This will also teach her a lesson: she must never delude herself into doing anything to replace Stephanie!”
That’s when I realized they’d been deceiving me all along.
“Catherine, are you listening to me?”
Mark frowned at me.
“Mark,” my voice emerged as a hoarse whisper,
“Let me go… I won’t stay in the Nguyen family anymore…”
Mark only snorted coldly:
“Not staying in the Nguyen family?
So we should let you out to ruin Stephanie’s reputation?”
“Catherine, I suggest you don’t try any tricks!”
With that, Mark stormed out, leaving me alone in the room crying silently.
Mark, I’m dying.
How could I possibly try any tricks now?
