After Rebirth I Let Her Have Him Chapter 01

Chapter 1 My Best Friend Killed Me

The heir to an old-money dynasty, Chadwick Carter, took an interest in my best friend and wanted to support her financially.
Since she was about to get married, I quietly deleted the text message he sent.
After graduation, my best friend got a steady job, married, and had a happy family.
Until one day, she ran into Chadwick Carter at the hospital, accompanying his girlfriend for a prenatal check-up.
When she found out the truth, she hated me. She accused me of ruining her dream of marrying into wealth.
Later, the news of Chadwick Carter grandly marrying his Cinderella hit the trending topics.
She was so distressed that her depression resurfaced. In a fit of rage, she pushed me off a tall building.
In this new life, I didn’t delete that text message.
Then I watched my best friend slowly descend into hell.

“It’s all your fault! Sophie Lawson, you’re just jealous that I have a man chasing me and you don’t!”
On the rooftop, Vivian Bennett screamed at me, “If it weren’t for you, I would be marrying him today!”
She said this because downstairs, Chadwick Carter, the heir to an old-money dynasty, was holding a once-in-a-lifetime wedding with his Cinderella.
Still dazed, she cried and pushed me off the building: “Who gave you the right to play God with my life? This is your punishment!”
As I fell quickly, I wondered if I had really made a mistake.
In my previous life, I had seen the text Chadwick Carter sent her.
The message came with an air of superiority, offering a contract.
It said he would pay Vivian Bennett a monthly allowance of 100,000, arrange a place for her to live, and require her to be at his beck and call.
She wasn’t allowed to interfere with his personal life or fall in love with him, and only he had the right to end the relationship.
When I saw it, I thought, this isn’t love—he’s just keeping her like a bird in a gilded cage.
And these rich young men were just looking for fun.
They didn’t really intend to marry her.
Besides, we had worked hard for years to achieve our dream. We were here to achieve our own value, not to be someone else’s plaything.
Moreover, Vivian Bennett already had a boyfriend, one she had been with for four years. He had just landed a stable government job.
She had also secured a job as a teacher, just as she had hoped.
The two of them were about to get married. That was true, stable happiness.
So, after seeing the text, I didn’t want her to be distracted. I secretly deleted it.
I thought their paths would never cross again.
But three years into her marriage, she still hadn’t gotten pregnant. She spent every day going to the hospital for check-ups, injections, and trying for IVF treatments.
And that was where she ran into Chadwick Carter, who was accompanying his girlfriend for a prenatal check-up.
Seeing her looking haggard, he mocked her: “Is this the life you imagined after rejecting me?”
That’s when she learned about the message.
One day, she came running to my lab, tore up my books, and shouted at me in front of everyone for not telling her, accusing me of having a heart as cold as a snake’s.
That’s when I remembered the whole thing.
I asked her, “You were about to get married, and invitations had already been sent. Because of a text, were you really going to break up and let someone else support you?”
She asked me, “Why can everyone else do it, but I can’t? Do you know what kind of life I’ve missed out on? I could have married into wealth and become a rich wife. I wouldn’t have to endure the contempt for not being able to have children, constantly running to the hospital, crying every day, and getting depressed. What’s wrong with being supported? Money is all that matters!”
I thought she had lost her mind.
She cried and said, “Do you know his girlfriend? She’s not as good-looking as me, not as good in figure, not as pretty. What does she have that I don’t? Why can she have it and I can’t?”
I told her, “Your boyfriend, Mark Hernandez, is great too. He’s been there for you all these years.”
“Plus, no one blames you for not having children. Even your in-laws told you to take your time. If it doesn’t work out, it’s okay not to have kids. Not everyone needs children. It’s your own stubbornness, your pressure to keep up with others, that’s been wearing you down.”
I also tried to explain the differences in how people from different worlds think, and how they view class and status, telling her that he was just playing with her.
At the time, Chadwick Carter already had a girlfriend, so after our intense argument, she didn’t bring it up again.
But from then on, whenever life went wrong for her, she would lash out at me, cursing me, hitting me, and even sending me venomous messages.
I would often wake up in the middle of the night to see her lengthy, guilt-tripping texts, leaving my pillow wet with tears.
My best friend I grew up with, and yet, it had come to this?
I apologized to her, but it was useless. She wouldn’t listen.
I knew it was my fault back then, so I endured it.
Until the news of Chadwick Carter’s marriage to Cinderella hit the trending topics.
She found me and dragged me to the scene, gripping my neck tightly: “It’s all your fault! If it weren’t for you, I would have had this life. I would have been Mrs. Carter!”
“That woman can marry him, so why can’t I? If it weren’t for you ruining my happiness, I would be the one on the news today!”
But she didn’t know that Chadwick Carter’s new wife, the Cinderella she was talking about, was his classmate from studying abroad.
Later, she caught the wave of the internet era, became an influencer, and built her company to the point of being listed.
Many media outlets hailed her as the Cinderella who had overcome all odds.
But Vivian Bennett ignored all that.
She only saw that the other woman’s background wasn’t as good as hers.
And then, she blamed me for everything.
The feeling of being crushed to the ground was painful.
Before my consciousness faded, I swore with all my heart, if I had another chance.
I would respect others’ fate and never get involved with Vivian Bennett again.
Suddenly, a voice spoke: “Are you sure?”
I answered firmly: “Yes.”
I never expected that I would truly go back to the day Chadwick Carter sent that text.
