Billionaire’s Regret: Custody War Chapter 01
On my son’s fourth birthday, his father, Vaughn Swanson, showed up.
He slid a check across the table toward me.
“Take this 1.5 million dollars and give us custody of Daniel,” he said.
“Miki can’t have kids, and she really likes him.”
The “Miki” in question was his fiancée, Micaela Whitford.
Five years ago, as I bled in the hospital during my pregnancy, I called Vaughn.
But he said Micaela was upset, and that he couldn’t leave her.
So I signed every consent form myself and went through the surgery alone.
After that, I vanished with the little savings I had.
And now, out of nowhere, he showed up, trying to buy my son and give him to another woman.
Vaughn looked at me. “Is it not enough? I can give you more.”
He thought I would cry, yell, and curse him.
But I simply picked up the check with a smile.
“Okay.”
Vaughn was stunned.
He had braced himself for every possible reaction, but not for this one.
I slipped the check into my pocket, unhurried and calm.
“When are we signing the contract?”
The scrutiny in Vaughn’s eyes gave way to confusion, then soured into irritation.
“Isabella, what kind of game are you playing?”
I crossed my arms and leaned back in my chair. “Mr. Swanson, you’re the one who needs something from me. The 1.5 million dollars for Dani’s custody is more than acceptable. Let’s sign the contract soon—I get the money, you get Dani, and everyone’s happy.”
My choice to call him Mr. Swanson instead of Vaughn made his frown deepen.
Beside him, Micaela gently held his hand and gave me a sweet smile.
“Bella, please don’t say that. We understand how hard it’s been raising Dani alone. From now on, he’ll be our child. We’ll—”
“Ms. Whitford,” I cut her off. “Dani is my son. Before we sign the contract, he’s only connected to me.”
Micaela’s face paled.
Vaughn stood up, towering over me.
“My lawyer will contact you tomorrow.”
Then he took Micaela’s hand and left.
For the entire time, he didn’t spare a single glance at our son, Daniel Rowlett, standing behind me.
Daniel stayed silent, his hand gripping my shirt.
I squatted down and stroked his hair.
“Are you scared?”
He shook his head, his eyes clear and bright.
“Mommy, who was that man?”
“A guy who wants to buy you lots of toys.”
