The Bride Of Endless Deaths Chapter 01

My husband, Julian Blake, was a Contractor. His Arcane Pact warned him that if he didn’t stay with the Supporting Character, she would die.
But he fell for me—the Lead Character—at first sight. Defying fate, he poured every ounce of his Pact’s Power into remaining in the Contracted Realm.
The consequences were brutal. I suffered the backlash, dying once every month.
Sometimes it was a car that crushed me into pulp beneath its tires. Sometimes a glass pane dropped from a skyscraper, slicing my neck clean through. Other times, a masked intruder stabbed me to death in my own home. Once, I was kidnapped, tortured, and drained of every last drop of blood.
And every time, just before the darkness claimed me, I saw my killer pull off his mask.
That face—it was Julian’s.
His Arcane Pact stared at my mangled body and let out a weary sigh.
[You’ve killed her ninety-nine times. Any more, and her body will be destroyed beyond repair.]
Julian’s expression was calm, almost detached.
“Evelyn is this world’s Lead Character. Only her death resets the timeline. Only then can Sierra rise again.”
“This will be the last time,” he added softly. “Once Sierra’s wishes are fulfilled, I’ll make it up to Evelyn. I swear it.”
The truth cut into me sharper than any blade. He had been killing me, again and again, just to bring back Sierra Prescott—the Supporting Character.
What he didn’t know was that I was a Contractor too.
My heart felt like it was being torn apart, but I forced myself to call out to my own Arcane Pact. “Arcane Pact, I want to go home.”
A familiar electronic voice echoed in my mind, steady and cold.
[Contractor, your Binding Quest progress has reached 100%. Do you confirm your departure from the Contracted Realm?]
I closed my eyes, tears streaming down my face.
“Confirm.”
[Understood, Contractor,] it replied. [You will exit the Contracted Realm upon your hundredth death.]
Julian’s Arcane Pact overheard the exchange. Its mechanical tone carried a faint sorrow.
[Contractor, you’ll regret treating her this way.]
“You think I don’t regret it already?” Julian snapped, rising to his feet. He couldn’t even look at me.
This time, he had tortured me for thirty-six relentless hours. With his own hands, he shattered my kneecaps, tore off my fingernails, ripped back my scalp, and hung me upside down until my body was drained of every drop of blood.
“For these three days and nights,” he whispered, clutching his chest, eyes bloodshot, “the pain wasn’t hers alone.”
His Arcane Pact was silent for a long moment before answering.
[You could have given her a swift death. There was no need for cruelty.]
“I had no choice,” Julian said, wiping away a tear. “If I wasn’t merciless, she would have suspected me.”
His voice cracked. “If I hadn’t fallen for her, Sierra wouldn’t have died. This is the debt I owe Sierra—and Evelyn. Once I fulfill all of Sierra’s wishes, I’ll make things right with Evelyn.”
He left me sprawled in the abandoned warehouse, bleeding out on the floor, and walked away without looking back.
I lay there, little more than a mangled heap. “Arcane Pact,” I rasped, “I want to use my Pact’s Power to claim Julian’s memories.”
The exchange was successful. Memories of my ninety-eight previous deaths flooded into me like a tidal wave.
He had run me over with a car so he could take Sierra to an amusement park for a Ferris wheel ride.
He had dropped a glass pane from a skyscraper, slicing me in half, just so he could go bungee jumping with her.
He had disguised himself as a burglar and stabbed me to death so he could volunteer with her at an animal shelter.
Every single time he killed me, his heart was with Sierra.
The weight of that truth drowned me in despair, far worse than the pain of ninety-nine deaths combined.
Blood mixed with tears as I laughed bitterly. “Arcane Pact,” I whispered, “I want to use the rest of my Pact’s Power to exchange for one last thing…”
If Julian thought he could betray me and walk away unscathed, he was gravely mistaken.
