He Called Me A Parasite I Said Goodbye Chapter 01

It wasn’t until the first month of college that I learned the entire school called me a “parasite.”
The nickname had come from Lene Hawthorne, Darnell Aide’s new desk mate.
Because I was always following Darnell—eating the breakfast he brought, using his campus card, and living in a rented place near his house.
I once asked Darnell why he didn’t stop it.
He only gave me a careless smile. “It’s just a nickname. Lene likes to joke around, don’t take it seriously.”
“Besides, you do stick to me every day, so it’s kind of like a parasite.”
I froze. It felt like someone had reached into my chest and squeezed my heart.
So my eighteen years of companionship had only been parasitic in his eyes.
I didn’t argue. I simply deleted every photo of Darnell from my phone.
Then I withdrew from school.
Darnell panicked. “Vania Riley, where are you going?”
“To a place where you’ll never find me.”

I first heard the nickname in the cafeteria.
It was an ordinary Wednesday afternoon. As usual, I carried my tray and stood in the crowded line.
Two girls in front of me were whispering, their voices low but just loud enough for me to catch.
“Look, the parasite’s here again.”
“Following Darnell around every day, doesn’t she feel ashamed?”
At first, I thought they were talking about someone else.
Until one of them turned around, her gaze lingering on me for a few seconds before she gave a meaningful smile.
I knew that smile too well.
It was the smile of someone watching a show, the smile of gloating, the smile that said, so you really don’t know yet.
My fingers tightened involuntarily, the tray’s edge digging painfully into my palm.
Parasite?
They were talking about me?
I looked around and only then realized how many people were staring.
Some leaned close to whisper, their fingers subtly pointing in my direction.
Some covered their mouths, laughing into their hands, eyes full of ridicule and contempt.
Others didn’t bother to hide it, staring openly at me as if I were some strange creature.
My face burned instantly.
Heat spread to my ears and neck until even breathing felt difficult.
I hurriedly finished getting my food, then fled from the counter and slipped into a seat in the farthest corner.
But I had barely taken two bites when the voices from the table beside me carried over.
“Vania’s so disgusting, clinging to Darnell all the time.”
The girl’s voice wasn’t even quiet. It was as if she didn’t care that I sat right there.
“I heard her family’s really poor and has always lived off the Aide family,” another chimed in.
“No wonder Lene calls her a parasite. It’s so fitting.”
“Exactly. I’ve never seen anyone so shameless.”
My hands began to shake.
The fork slipped from my fingers and clattered loudly against the table.
The girls turned toward the sound, saw me, and instead of quieting down, laughed even harder.
“Oh look, the parasite’s mad.”
“Stop pretending, it’s not like we said anything untrue.”
I bit down hard, trying to hold myself together.
But my hands wouldn’t stop trembling. Even holding a fork felt impossible.
The food in front of me turned to wax, tasteless and impossible to swallow.
In the end, I gave up.
I picked up the barely touched tray and walked quickly out of the cafeteria.
Behind me, the laughter rose like a tide, crashing over me until I could barely breathe.
