In a bold and much-anticipated livestream, renowned tech repair expert Yang Changshun carried out the internet’s first teardown of the Huawei Pura 80 Ultra, instantly capturing the attention of tech enthusiasts across the web.

Huawei’s latest flagship proved exceptionally difficult to crack open, with its telephoto module — so much so that Yang resorted to a rotary electric cutter to breach its ultra-reinforced chassis. Despite the use of force and determination, the teardown spanned close to an hour, with Yang at one point exclaiming in frustration, “I can’t cut it at all!”

At the heart of the Pura 80 Ultra lies its standout innovation — a single sensor powering two periscope telephoto lenses. This groundbreaking imaging system blends a 3.7x medium telephoto with a 9.4x ultra-telephoto lens, both linked to a shared 1/1.28-inch sensor — currently the largest ever used for telephoto imaging in smartphones. It’s not just about hardware heft; Huawei introduced a micro-motor-driven dual optical path switching system comprising over 140 miniature components, including a dual-helix self-locking mechanism, to ensure seamless and stable switching between the two focal lengths.

Huawei’s official pricing pegs this lens module at 2,899 yuan — a figure equivalent to some standalone flagship devices. No surprise then, that company executive Richard Yu described it as the most expensive camera module Huawei has ever created. Yang’s teardown didn’t just pull back the curtain on Huawei’s craftsmanship — it showcased just how far smartphone engineering has come.
