The researchers emphasize that their approach will be most effective if it receives backing from national leaders and is not primarily driven by independent app developers. No countries are currently using this method. However, given the market penetration of mobile phones and people's familiarity with receiving texts, it's easy to see why this approach makes sense.

Aside from the race to stop the spread of COVID-19, scientists are working hard to find effective treatments as soon as possible. The typical antibody discovery process in a lab takes years. On the other hand, this method only takes one week to screen for therapeutic antibodies with a high likelihood of success. Two Columbia University data science graduates have turned to machine learning for assistance.



The team taking this approach claims that it is also less expensive than traditional methods. Humans are still involved in the process because the machine learning algorithm must test the gene sequences identified as most promising. However, using this expedited method could be critical in finding effective interventions for coronavirus patients.
