The statements of Austria's Interior Minister, Gerhard Karner, carried a preliminary indication of the outcome of the Russian invasion, as 100,000 Ukrainian refugees are expected to arrive in his country within a few months, noting that "the European Union also expected that one million refugees would arrive in all the countries of the Union after the Russian invasion." for eastern Ukraine.

Karner said - in statements on Wednesday - that his country has prepared well to receive refugees, pointing out that there are two ways to flee from Ukraine, the first through Poland, where there are about 500 kilometers as a common border between Poland and Ukraine, and the second is through the borders with Romania and Hungary.

An already aggravating issue

In late December 2021, the United Nations issued a statement on the harvest of a number of important issues during the year, among them migration and refugees.

The organization said that the travel restrictions related to the Covid-19 pandemic may have affected figures and statistics related to international migration in 2021, but the number of people forced to leave their homes, due to conflict and persecution, has risen to record levels.

By November of the same year, more than 84 million people had been forced from their homes, according to data from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, an increase from 2020 and 2019 - which saw record numbers of forcibly displaced people, in the whole world.

This rise in the numbers of displaced people and refugees was coupled with a decrease in global mobility, in general, due to the strictness of travel procedures, prompting the Director-General of the International Organization for Migration, Antonio Vitorino, to declare that the world is “witnessing a paradox unprecedented in human history.”

Russian preparations

On the Russian side, the Russian Emergencies Ministry announced last Sunday that it had prepared 250 temporary residence points, with a capacity to accommodate more than 28 thousand people, to receive refugees from Donbass in eastern Ukraine.

In a statement carried by the Russian "Sputnik" agency, the Ministry of Emergencies stated that at the moment, 30 regions in Russia have declared their readiness to receive refugees, noting that there are 255 temporary residence points capable of accommodating more than 28 thousand people, ready to receive refugees from Donbass.

According to Russian media, Russian President Putin had earlier ordered the Minister of Emergencies to provide sustenance for refugees from eastern Ukraine, and to travel to the Rostov region to organize housing conditions for refugees from the Donetsk and Luhansk republics in eastern Ukraine, and to work to provide them with hot meals, and medical care. And all the basic necessities.
