First M-SHORAD Stryker Vehicle Testing With U.S. Army Unit
First M-SHORAD Stryker Vehicle Testing With U.S. Army Unit
The defensive system integrates an array of weapons and sensors on a Stryker A1.

The IAV Stryker is a highly capable military vehicle developed by General Dynamics for use by the United States Army. The beauty of the Stryker is that it can have multiple uses, and it now has another one. To continue to update the US Army Air and Missile Defense systems and forces, the 5th Battalion, 4th Air Defense Artillery Regiment, or the 5-4 ADA have taken delivery of Stryker units equipped with the Mobile Short Range Air Defense, or M-SHORAD. This is the first battalion in the Army to test and receive the equipment.
The System Sits Atop A Stryker A1

Sitting atop a Stryker A1, the M-SHORAD system comprises existing guns, missiles, and rockets and is the Army’s latest addition is an effort of modernization. What is the system designed for? Simply put, it is designed to defend attacking forces against various airborne threats. These include unmanned aircraft such as drones, helicopters, and other rotary-winged aircraft plus conventional fixed-wing attack aircraft. The prototype underwent a sixth-month initial operational assessment at white Sands Missile Range, New Mexico, in 2020.
More Units Are Set To Be Delivered

Sgt. Andrew Veres, an Air and Missile Defense crewmember with the 5-4 ADA said “Everything in these systems is an improvement – the survivability, mobility, dependability, off-road ability – it gives us the ability to stay in the fight longer.” The Army hopes that the addition of the Stryker-based system will allow for better protection of maneuver forces, at an increased range whilst also allowing for improved mobility as well. The battalion has initially received four units says the Army, and more are expected later this year.
This Is A Big Change For The 5-4 ADA

This marks a big change for the 5-4 ADA. This change will see them transition from an Avenger-based battalion to become the first in the Army to become fully operational with the M-SHORAD system. The Army says they hope to field the M-SHORAD system to four additional Air and Missile Defense battalions in 2021, the 5-4 ADA of course becoming the first. It is all part of the Army’s modernization strategy, which has placed a big emphasis on the development of Air Defense systems, to ensure a much more capable force and allow for greater battlefield flexibility.
