Civil Human Rights Front under police investigation for allegedly receiving funding from NED in U.S

5th March 2021 – (Hong Kong) According to sources, Civil Human Rights Front (CHRF), which has organised many demonstrations since the anti-extradition movement is under police investigation. If it is confirmed that it has been funded by the National Endowment for Democracy (NED), the CHRF may be banned by the Hong Kong government in a short time. According to reports, the CHRF will become the next law enforcement target of the Hong Kong government. Earlier, it was circulated on the Internet that the NED had funded FDC to organise anti-extradition activities. The authorities have launched an investigation.
The source also pointed out that the original CHRF had not registered with the government and it might violate the “Societies Ordinance.” According to the Societies Ordinance (Cap. 151), Laws of Hong Kong, any organisation established in Hong Kong may register as a society under the Societies Ordinance, except those that have been registered under other Ordinances. An organisation, depending on its object, nature and operation, may decide to register under any appropriate ordinance. Any association which intends to apply for registration as a society or exemption from registration under the Societies Ordinance shall submit to the Police Licensing Office within one month of its establishment an application form together with supporting documents.
Once convicted, the person in charge of the CHRF can be imprisoned for up to 3 months. In response, Figo Chan, the convener of the Civil Human Rights Front stated on Facebook that the organisation has never received funding from any foreign government or institution, including the NED. He also reiterated that its funding has always been relying on donations from the general public during the assembly.
