Hey gan. Today I want to share about the differences between orang pedalaman, pegunungan, and pesisir. You know that Indonesian people generally divided into three group of people. The first is orang pedalaman, then pegunungan, the last is pesisir.

Orang pedalaman are people origin from pedalaman part of Indonesia. In Indonesia, many of them live in Kalimantan, some part of Java, east Sumatera, until south and northern part of Papua. Generally they live more than 10 kilometer from the beach. They live in pedalaman but in dataran rendah not pegunungan. The most common area is in Kalimantan. Until pedalaman, the land of Kalimantan still low elevation, most of them lower than 500 meters, so the people there called orang pedalaman not orang pegunungan. They are hard working people and typically very need of river because river is the source of transportation. But since the infrastructure developed, they become more accessible. 

Then is orang pegunungan. Typically they live in western part of Sumatera, middle Java, middle Sulawesi, until middle Papua. They tend to be really strong because of lack of infrastructure there. The difference with orang pedalaman is orang pegunungan can't harvest paddy so they typically eat cassava. They can plant tea or many plants that live in high elevation.

The last is orang pesisir. They are live around 10 kilometer from the sea so many of them are nelayan. They plant paddy and many harvest like corn, tebu, until onion. They are petani sawah not like orang pegunungan who many work in perkebunan. Orang pesisir is hard woker too same like orang pedalaman and orang pegunungan but their live is easier because of better infrastructure. For example, I think the biggest road in Indonesia are in eastern coast of Sumatera and northern coast of Java so they are more developed. In Papua also the coast is already has better infrastructure.

So that's the difference between orang pedalaman, orang pegunungan, and orang pesisir.
