Hong Kong protests hit MMA as local promotion Just postpones its November 9 show
Local organisation Just MMA has become the latest sporting body to postpone an upcoming event because of the Hong Kong protests.
The company has shelved its "Just MMA Hong Kong 4" show, which was set for November 9 at Wan Chai's Southorn Stadium, until at least March next year amid concerns over the ongoing anti-government demonstrations.
The indoor arena is situated on Johnston Road - which runs adjacent to Hennessy Road, where demonstrators have clashed with riot police and where tear gas has been fired.
"The current situation in Hong Kong has created much concern (for the) safety for our fans, our athletes, and our staff. The availability of venue and insurance on the day of the event has also become uncertain," Just MMA chairman Andrew Chan said in a statement to The Fight Nation.
Angel's Fighting Championship middleweight titlist Sasha Palatnikov (4-1) - the first Hong Kong-born MMA champion - was set to fight against Manas Temirbekov (8-5) of Kyrgyzstan at welterweight on the show.
"I'm very, very disappointed to say the least. I chose to fight at home in front of the Hong Kong fans over fighting in Korea on the exact same date," Palatnikov told the Post.
Palatnikov has been in Ukraine training with national boxing team coach Dmitriy Sosnovskiy, who has trained and cornered Vasily Lomachenko and Oleksandr Usyk to Olympic gold medals.
"I took this fight very seriously having invested my own money on my training camp in Ukraine," he said. "People might not realise the investment fighters make financially, to prepare to put on a show for the fans."
Palatnikov is hopeful of getting booked for the AFC show on November 9."It's a shame these protests are indirectly taking money out of people's pockets and preventing athletes from pursuing their dreams," he said.
"I represent Hong Kong, it's my home, and I'm proud to put this city on the map. The damage that is being done to this city is heartbreaking, I hope people will realise that destroying our city will not bring peace or results."
