For your information, Doom Island is a part of the Sorong District region .

This island is located at approximately 2 km from the Sorong City Port.

Doom Island is a historical island in the Sorong City region. By using a long boat from the Sorong City Port, you can travel to Doom Island to see some historical heritages there.

Doom Island or Dum Island means that this island has many fruit trees. There are a lot of fruit trees that grow in this island, especially the breadfruit trees.

Doom Island is not too big, because this island has an area of only about 3.5 km2. However, Doom Island is a densely populated island and is inhabited by the newcomers who are generally come from Javanese, Butonese, Bugis, and Toraja ethnic groups.

In the ancient times, Doom Island was an island belonging to Malibela Family, a Moluccan noble family. The initial inhabitants of this island were the people who were assigned to supervise Soop Island and South Nana Island, the two other islands belonging to Malibela Family.

During the Dutch Colonial Era, Doom Island was the capital of the Sorong City’s Onderafdeling. Therefore, this island is well-organized and well-planned by the Dutch government.

The buildings in the Doom Island have an architecture that is very different from the buildings in the any region in Papua, including in the mainland of Sorong City. In general, the houses in Papua are the houses on stilts and are the wooden houses. Nevertheless, the buildings in the Doom Island are the Dutch-style houses with the famously strong and neatly arranged constructions. Various public facilities of the Dutch Colonial Era, such as “the pleasure houses”, the churches, the army barracks, government officials’ housing, Hoofd van Plaatselijk Bestuur office, water wells, and the diesel power plants, are still built firmly everywhere. It feels as if it’s not in the Sorong City region.

The unique thing is that there are many Indonesian cycle rickshaws passing by in the Doom Island. Amazingly, those Indonesian cycle rickshaws only exists in the Doom Island and does not spread to the mainland of Sorong City. According to an Indonesian cycle rickshaw driver, those cycle rickshaws was brought by the several migrants in the past times who had decided to stay on the Doom Island. The Indonesian cycle rickshaws then became one of the main mode of transportation in the Doom Island. Not only the Indonesian cycle rickshaws, there are also the motorbikes and the bicycles that are used as the mode of transportation in this island. Meanwhile, to reach the Doom Island from the mainland of Sorong City, people use the motor boats or the fishing boats.

Today, Doom Island is still widely known by the tourists. According to some Dutch army veterans, Doom Island is an island that is always interesting to visit. Therefore, there are many foreign tourists visiting Doom Island just to memorize the past time. Most of them are the tourists from Netherland and Japan. Nevertheless, due to the high traffic of the visitors, the historical heritages in the Doom Island can be easily destructed or ruined. Therefore, all tourists should take care of the environment, especially take care of the historical heritages when they are spending a vacation in the Doom Island.
