Students say Uber driver stole laptop left in car

A group of uni students have accused an Uber driver of taking a laptop one of them left in his car.

Brisbane residents Kathryn and Rory booked a trip with driver Zihong, but Rory said he left Kathryn's laptop on the floor in front of the car.

The day after the late-night trip, Rory contacted Zihong through the Uber app to ask if he had the missing laptop.

"He said basically, 'no, I clean my car out every night and I absolutely don't have it'," Rory told A Current Affair.

Two days later, Kathryn received a Facebook message asking her if she had lost her computer recently.

"He said, 'I've been approached by somebody with a laptop to unlock it'," she said.

"I confirmed the serial number with him and he said, 'Okay, good, I think a guy has your computer'."

Kathryn and Rory said the man did not know the name of the person who approached him, but provided a description of his car and licence plate Rory said "exactly matched" the one driven by Zihong.

Two other people Connor and James, were with Kathryn and Rory the night the laptop went missing.

"We've given (the driver) plenty of chances to step up," James said.

"You've been caught, okay, fine, just give it back, no problems, but yeah - just a scumbag."

The driver has repeatedly denied he has the laptop.

Rory contacted Uber, who told him their drivers are contractors and that "if you believe the driver-partner has your laptop and is refusing to return it, we recommend formal litigation".

Kathryn reported the incident to police, who contacted the driver.

"The police told me for 20 minutes he was like, 'no, I don't have it, I make $1200 on a weekend ... why would I need to steal a computer'," she said.
