Suspect in northern China shooting spree knew the five victims, police say
The man arrested for killing five people in Inner Mongolia on Monday knew the victims, police said.
Police identified the suspect as a 44-year-old man surnamed Liang, The Beijing News reported. He worked as a deputy director of the water plant where the first shooting took place. Police are still trying to trace where the gun came from.Liang is alleged to have opened fire at three locations on March 25 and killed five people before he was shot and arrested, police said.
The first shootings took place in Kailu county's South No 2 water plant at about 3.30pm and two people were killed.
The victims, surnamed Sun and Fu, were Liang's colleagues. Sun was also a deputy director at the plant, and Fu was a member of staff.
Sun was shot twice as he tried to break up an argument involving Liang, a relative of the dead man told Thepaper.cn.
Fu was shot four times, the report said. It was not clear if Fu was involved in the argument with Liang, or what the dispute was about.
The gunman then went to a store that sold Buddhist collectibles, where the owners, an elderly couple in their 60s and 70s, were killed. A neighbour surnamed Wang, who was in the store at the time of the crime, told Thepaper.cn that the gunman shot the woman, then her husband.
"I saw the man's head was bleeding, that is when I realised it was a real gun," Wang was quoted as saying. He said he feared he would be killed, but the killer said the shootings had nothing to do with him and left.
But while police said the gunman knew his victims, the couple's son told The Beijing News that his parents did not know the suspect. He said his mother was shot once and his father five times.
The third shooting happened near a building supplies store on the eastern outskirts of the county. The 45-year-old victim, a second man also surnamed Sun, had known the suspect for years, the dead man's father told Thepaper. They had worked together on the county's water supply system and grew up as neighbours.
"Bystanders were yelling 'car accident, car accident', my son was lying by the side of the car, bleeding," Sun's father was quoted as saying. He found out later his son had been shot.
The gunman was arrested about 2km from the third location, the report said.
An employee at the water plant told Thepaper.cn that Liang got on well with his workmates.
Shootings in China are rare as private gun ownership is banned. There were 42 cases involving the use of a firearm in China in first 11 months of 2018, a fall of more than a quarter from the previous year, the Ministry of Public Security said.
The statistics on the number of deaths by firearms were not available.
