Chinese human rights lawyer Wang Yu freed after being detained outside US embassy
Wang Yu, the Chinese human rights lawyer who was taken away by police outside the US embassy in Beijing on Wednesday night, has been released after several hours' detention, according to her husband Bao Longjun.Wang was the first lawyer to be swept up in the nationwide "709" clampdown on lawyers and activists launched on July 9, 2015 in what critics said was an attempt to stymie China's emerging rights defence movement.
Wang was handcuffed and taken away by police when she went to the embassy to take part in a seminar and refused to show identification to officers at a checkpoint outside the building.
The seminar she had planned to attend was being held to mark Women's History Month and was on the theme of "Using the Law to Combat Domestic Violence". The event went ahead as scheduled at 6.30pm.
Wang was detained a few minutes beforehand after she told police she had not brought an identity card with her and questioned their behaviour.
"The police then took her away and handcuffed her hands from the back, dragged her to a police car and took her to a police station," Beijing land rights activist Tang Zhishun who was with her at the time said. "The whole thing happened within a few minutes."
Embassy staff tried to convince the officers to let Wang in, Tang said, but the police ignored their request.
