Who is worse? An Indian or a snake?
Storm in Malaysia over legislator’s racial slur against Indian community
HONG KONG: A minor storm is raging in a Malaysian state after a female legislator from the Malay-majority Barisan Nasional (National Front) coalition uttered a racial slur targeting Indians on the floor of the state assembly.
During a stormy day in the Perak state assembly, when the Speaker, V Sivakumar, an ethnic Indian, was being constantly heckled by Opposition BN members, Hamidah Osman, who represents the Sungai Rapat constituency, stood up and asked a provocative question. “There’s a well-known Malay saying that goes ‘If you see a snake and an Indian, kill the Indian first.’ Do you agree or disagree with it?”
When legislators from the ruling coalition demanded that Osman withdraw her words, she maintained that she was merely asking if Sivakumar agreed or disagreed with it. But after the chief whip of the National Front Datuk Seri Mohamad Tajol Rosli Ghazali asked her to retract her words, she did. The Speaker warned her against bringing up “sensitive” subjects on the floor.
Osman’s remarks, which show up the racial stereotyping that underlies multi-racial Malaysian society in the throes of transition, have their roots in the experience of Malay farmers in an earlier time when they were evidently cheated by Indian traders.
But coming as they did months after an uprising by the Indian community against discrimination by Malay leaders, her comments whipped up a storm of protests from Indian community leaders.
