After absorbing Doosan DST and Samsung Techwin in recent times, Hanwha Defense Systems has emerged as South Korea’s largest defence conglomerate, and it displayed a wide range of armoured vehicles at Seoul ADEX 2017.

Making a reappearance at Seoul ADEX was the K21-105, which fuses a CMI Defence XC-8 turret and 105mm high-pressure gun onto the hull of a K21 to create a 25t medium tank operated by a four-man crew.

The type has previously been demonstrated to the Republic of Korea Army (ROKA), which expressed interest, but until now there exists no formal requirement for such a vehicle.

Hanwha is therefore promoting the K21-105 to potential export markets in the interim in conjunction with the Belgian turret manufacturer.
However, with CMI Defence deciding to tie up with SAIC and ST Kinetics for the Mobile Protected Firepower (MPF) programme in the US, the South Korean company admitted that its options in the US were negated.

The K21-105 on display at Seoul ADEX, the only prototype in existence, was shown fitted with Soucy rubber tracks, which produces a 30% weight reduction in terms of its tracks.
