The American college students attacked with acid at a French train station are urging compassion for their assailant suffering from “mental illness.”

Michelle Krug, from White Plains, N.Y., and Charlotte Kaufman, from Long Island, were with friends Courtney Siverling and Kelsey Kosten in the southern city of Marseille on Sunday morning when a woman splashed them with a caustic substance.

The attack at a transit hub sparked worries of extremism, though Boston College said that French police described the acid thrower as “disturbed.”

Krug said that she and Kaufman were expecting a quick recovery after being hit in the eye with a weak solution of hydrochloric acid. The other two students said they did not receive serious injuries.

The young women, all juniors, were released from the hospital later Sunday, according to Boston College, which praised its pupils for preaching forgiveness.

“I ask that if you send thoughts and prayers our way, please consider thinking about/praying for our attacker so that she may receive the help she needs and deserves,” Krug posted on Facebook.

“Mental illness is not a choice and should not be villainized.”

Her classmate at B.C., a private Jesuit school, also expressed sympathy for the woman who lashed out at them.

“I pray that the attacker would be healed from her mental illness in the name of Jesus and receive the forgiveness and salvation that can only come from Him,” Silvering wrote on Facebook.

"We are very proud of our students and the gracious manner in which they have handled themselves throughout this ordeal," Boston College spokesman Jack Dunn said.

Prosecutor Xavier Tarabeux told local outlet 20 Minutes Marseilles that the assailant did not know that her targets were American when she splashed them.

Boston College said that the students will continue their time abroad – Krug Kaufman and Siverling in Paris and Kosten in Copenhagen.
