Racial attack occurs at Transjakarta bus stop

A 24-year-old Chinese-Indonesian man has reported being attacked at a Transjakarta bus stop on Friday evening by people who called him Ahok, the nickname of Jakarta Governor Basuki Tjajaja Purnama. The attackers also reportedly screamed racial slurs at him.
After the attack, Andrew Budikusuma went to the emergency unit at Siloam Hospital in Kebun Jeruk, West Jakarta, to have his injured lips and a bump on the head treated.
“I remember it well, they asked me: ‘Which do you prefer? Slanty eyes or closed eyes? They also screamed ‘Ahok, Ahok, you’re Ahok, right?’ at me,” Andrew told The Jakarta Post on Monday.
Andrew said the incident occurred between 9 p.m. and 10 p.m. when he was traveling on the Transjakarta bus from Kuningan Barat in South Jakarta to Pluit in North Jakarta.
When the bus stopped at the Senayan JCC shelter, three or four men entered the bus and reportedly screamed “Ahok, Ahok” at him. Andrew, who was standing near the door, was pulled off the bus by the men. A passenger came to his rescue and pulled him back onto the bus. Andrew said Transjakarta staff did not try to help him.
Andrew intends to report the incident to Jakarta Police on Tuesday and ask that the CCTV footage be used as evidence. On Sunday, Andrew reported the incident via the Transjakarta hotline. A Transjakarta employee said the CCTV had filmed the attack. (bbn)
