'It's time to make history!': Nickelodeon debuts its first ever bi-racial gay couple on cartoon The Loud House

A Nickelodeon show is making network history after introducing its first ever bi-racial gay couple.

The couple will appear on The Loud House, a cartoon which centers around the life of Lincoln Loud and his ten sisters.

On the July 20 episode, the couple, Harold and Howard McBride - voiced by Wayne Brady and Michael McDonald - are taking their son, Clyde McBride, to a slumber party at the Loud house.





The two children are speaking on walkie talkies as young McBride heads over to the Loud household.

The show's innovative scene is heralded by Loud telling McBride: 'It's time to make history!' just as the McBride parents ring his doorbell.

The scene focuses on how McBride's parents are extremely overprotective of their son and shows them handing Loud a sleeping bag, pajamas, a white noise machine, a humidifier, a dehumidifier, earplugs, inhaler and so on.

Mr McBride even hands his son a photo of himself and his partner and breaks down in tears after realizing he won't be able to tuck him into bed that night.

The amusing scene makes no fanfare about the couple's sexuality but instead draws attention to the couple's cautious nature.





The episode, called Overnight Success, is due to air Wednesday, but a clip was shared on Twitter at the weekend.

The response has been overwhelmingly positive, with hundreds taking to social media to express their delight.

Neon Cavalry tweeted: 'Great to see the US catching up to France in normalizing same sex couples in kids shows.'

While Torrie Starfrost ‏wrote: 'This show was good already, glad to see this and it being natural.'

And Biggest Little Fumei said: 'Gay parents behaving like any other parents. No big deal made out of it. This is excellent. <3'

While the episode has been celebrated for pushing liberal values, the Disney channel actually got there first when two lesbian mothers visited the Duncan family in a January 2104 episode of Good Luck Charlie.







But while The Loud House doesn't draw attention to McBride's parents' sexuality, the appearance of a same-sex couple seems set off some confusion among Charlie Duncan's parents, Amy and Bob.

As the couple walks in, Mr Duncan exclaims: 'Taylor has two moms!' to which Mrs Duncan replies: 'Wow, nothing gets past you, Bob.'

The episode was blasted by conservative parents, led by campaign called One Million Moms, conservative watchdog group that launched a campaign against its airing.

But it's not the first time Nickelodeon have represented queer characters, in a 2015 episode of animated series Bubble Gubbies called Costume Boxing, drag queen RuPaul voices RuPearl a stylish sea snail, who is a judge during an underwater Fashion Week.

Meanwhile, on The Legend of Korra, lead character Korra and her best friend, Asami, shared a passionate kiss in the show's two-part series finale in 2014, after a long build up.
