Denel PMP is well advanced in the development of its new 20x42 mm belt-fed iNkunzi Strike support weapon, IHS Jane's has been told.
The iNkunzi Strike uses the same ammunition as the semi-automatic iNkunzi Personal Area Weapon (PAW) and has been specifically designed to fit any mounting that will take a typical 7.62 mm machine gun. At 13 kg, it is slightly heavier than most such weapons, but somewhat more compact at 850 mm in length.
The Strike can accept left-hand or right-hand ammunition feed (adjustable by a unit armourer) and uses standard NSV-type links. It fires at 300-350 rounds per minute, with an accurate range of 400 m against small targets, 600 m against larger targets, and effective suppressive fire out to 1,000 m. Its extreme range would be about 3,000 m for disruptive or harassing fire against an area target, but this needs to be investigated further.
The ammunition range comprises high-explosive incendiary (HEI), semi-armour-piercing HEI (SAPHEI), ball, and ball tracer, the latter two also doubling as practice ammunition. The 160 g HEI round has a 110 g projectile filled with Hexal P30, an RDX-based explosive composition.
