Two handguns and heroin, cocaine and marijuana were seized from a car by Frederick City police after a traffic stop on New Year’s Eve on Waverly Drive, according to a news release by police.

Three Frederick men were subsequently arrested, one of them after he tried to flee on foot, the release stated.

Those arrested were Theron Lionel Jackson, 31, Nathan Nathaniel Barnes, 30, and Christhian Antonio Marroquin Martinez, 18. All three suspects were taken to the Frederick County Adult Detention Center for processing.

Police say the arrest began at 7:09 p.m. when two officers on patrol spotted a car with no rear license-plate light operating.

After pulling the car over, police say the front-seat passenger, Jackson, fled on foot. As he was fleeing, police say Jackson discarded quantities of heroin and cocaine. One of the officers gave chase and apprehended Jackson a short distance away.

The second officer remained with the car and spotted in plain sight in the vehicle additional cocaine, a digital scale, and a handgun, the release states. Barnes and Martinez were then arrested and a search of the entire car conducted. During the search, the release states, a large amount of cash, a second handgun and several bags of marijuana were found.

A police check of Jackson and Barnes revealed that they both were prohibited from possessing firearms because of prior criminal convictions.

Barnes and Jackson were charged with numerous felony and misdemeanor charges related to the handguns, heroin, cocaine and marijuana. Martinez was charged with offenses only related to the handguns.
