A US Marine Corps (USMC) F/A-18C Hornet crashed in southeast England on 21 October, the USMC confirmed.
The single-seat aircraft crashed shortly after take-off from RAF Lakenheath, Suffolk, killing the pilot. The cause of the crash is currently unknown and under investigation.
The Hornet was from Marine Fighter Attack Squadron 232 (VMFA-232), based at Miramar, California. It was one of six transiting through RAF Lakenheath, home to the F-15s of the US Air Force's 48th Fighter Wing, while returning to Miramar following operational deployment in Bahrain. The remaining five F/A-18s were safely diverted to RAF Lossiemouth in Scotland.
