Four-year-old toddler dies in escalator accident in China
The latest in a spate of fatal escalator accidents has sparked outrage in China

A four-year-old boy has died after being caught in an escalator in south-west China sparking outrage among Chinese citizens.
The boy was playing unattended when his arm became stuck in an escalator handrail at a metro station in Chongqing municipality on Thursday morning, state newspaper the People's Daily reported.
Images of the incident emerged on Chinese social media, causing anger over the poor health and safety regulations that have led to a spate of fatal incidents involving lifts and escalators this year.
“There are many similar cases in our country – it has happened more than once or twice. High attention should be paid. Regular checks and timely repairs should be made for safety protection. The frequency of such cases has got too high. [I feel] heartbroken,” wrote Sweartotheworld on Weibo.
“The escalator death cases are the result of negligence of duty,” posted another named Shazhilun.
The metro operator told reporters at the Chongqing Morning Post that a woman, thought to be the boy’s mother, had left the child and a three-year-old girl unattended.
Video footage showing the boy stuck in the escalator mechanism while his mother stands helplessly nearby went viral in China on Friday.
The escalator has been halted pending further investigation into the cause of the accident. The tragedy is the latest in a string of accidents involving escalators and lifts across China.
In July, a woman in Hubei province, eastern China, died after a metal step gave way beneath her at a department store. Images emerged of the mother pushing her son to safety before being sucked into the machinery.
In August, a 35-year-old cleaner became trapped in a mall escalator in Shanghai resulting in leg amputation.
Most recently, a three-year-old girl got was injured when after getting her arm stuck in a supermarket escalator also in Chongqing last month.
The tragedies have become so frequent they have inspired internet memes, featuring spoof images of extreme safety precautions.
In the wake of Shanghai incident in August, the Shanghai quality and technical supervision bureau carried out an inspection and ordered the suspension of 33 machines across the city.
The number of people who have died in lift or escalator related incidents this year in China is unknown.
