Invictus
Invictus
By: William Ernest Henley

Out of the night that covers me,
Black as the pit from pole to pole,
I thank whatever gods may be
For my unconquerable soul.

In the fell clutch of circumstance
I have not winced nor cried aloud.
Under the bludgeonings of chance
My head is bloody, but unbowed.

Beyond this place of wrath and tears
Looms but the Horror of the shade,
And yet the menace of the years
Finds and shall find me unafraid.

It matters not how strait the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll,
I am the master of my fate,
I am the captain of my soul.

The title, Invictus is a Latin word, which means unconquered. This poem becomes my favorite because it taught me to never give up on any circumstances. If we read it deeper into it, we can identify how all the verses sounds similar to each other, first and second line is talking about the hardship of the character, meanwhile the third and fourth line is consist of words of encouragement. The unique thing is that even though the meaning of each verse seems repetitive, William Ernest Henley able to cover it by corrects choices of words.
The first time I read this poem was in my English class in elementary school in Indonesia. This poem left me with a strong first impression. I learned that this poem also inspired many people, when Nelson Mandela was incarcerated in Robben Island prison; he recited this poem to other prisoners and was empowered by its message of self-mastery.
I also have experienced the time when I felt feeble against my struggle; in particular it was last year when I tried to adapt with my new circumstances in USA. I felt many pressure around me, but one day I saw this poem again in Internet. I read each line slowly, and make connection of each line from this poem to everything I’ve been through. For each encouragement line I read, I felt like my body is charged with positive feeling. Since then, I started to feel better and I successfully adapted with my new circumstances. This poem reminds me that “I am the master of my fate, I am the captain of my soul.”
