Guided missile LOGIR (USA / South Korea)
Guided missile LOGIR (USA / South Korea)

Since the mid-nineties, the US develop a control system that can make a bomb or missile unmanageable precision weapons. In 1999, the US organization DARPA entered into an agreement with the Ministry of Defense of South Korea, according to which the experts of the two countries had to develop a similar system. The new guided missile, manufactured on the basis of unmanageable designed specifically for the South Korean armed forces.

The name of the new project, LOGIR, fully reflect the requirements imposed: Low-Cost Guided Imaging Rocket - «guided missile low cost, suggestive image on purpose." As a basis for guided missile was proposed product Hydra 70. This rocket system was actively used and continues to be used by the US military and South Korea, which made it possible to reduce the cost and simplify the production of the new weapons. In addition, since the late nineties a number of American companies engaged in the development of guided weapons on the basis of the rocket Hydra 70, which could to some extent, to simplify the creation of the project LOGIR.

To date, the world's developed several types of guided missiles based Hydra 70. All of these munitions is proposed to equip a laser guidance system. In the late nineties and early two thousandth's appearance such weapons only formed, because of what the US and Korean engineers decided to use the waste and-proven equipment. Prospective missile LOGIR decided to equip the infrared homing head.

It is noteworthy that this equipment is proposed to borrow from existing systems. As a result of the rocket to the South Korean army has received an infrared seeker developed for a modification of the system JDAM. Last fall bombs meant equipping a set of special equipment. Developed versions with laser, infrared and satellite guidance systems, but initially only the last series went. Infrared seeker, in turn, has been applied in the project LOGIR.

Guided missile LOGIR has architecture typical of ammunition in its class. The head part of the product given by homing and control equipment. Behind it is a combat unit, and rear compartment housing accommodates solid rocket motor. In addition, the tail are decomposed into a flight stabilizers. They give the rocket rotation and thereby ensure the stability behavior of the trajectory.

Basic unguided rocket Hydra 70 "gave" product LOGIR body, engine and warhead. In fact, a new model of guided missile must be made by installing control equipment on the base unguided munitions. After installing the unit with control equipment length of the rocket increases to approximately 1.7 m. The caliber remains the same - 70 mm.

Recent modifications rocket Hydra 70 are equipped with solid engine Mk 66 Mod 4 version, Mod and Mod 6. 5 These engines have a charge of fuel weighing about 6.2 kg and is able to accelerate rockets up to speed about 700 m / s. Effective range "Hydra-70" - 8 km, the maximum - 10.5 km. Due to the use of control equipment, weight rocket LOGIR, characteristics of the last bit less.

LOGIR control unit is a cylindrical body with a set of various equipment. At the head of an infrared seeker is placed in the middle and tail - power supply, computer, controls and servos. For rocket flight control uses X-shaped folding handlebars.

The most important feature of the project is to use LOGIR infrared homing. Other modern guided missiles based unmanaged equipped with laser seeker, but a joint US-Korean development uses a different principle of guidance. Infrared seeker was chosen for several reasons. It is possible to use existing components, reasonable cost and wide enough combat capabilities.

Infrared homing head is capable of detecting targets at ranges of about 2 km. Since the missile range LOGIR beyond the effective range of the GOS, the initial and midcourse flight using an inertial navigation system. Then turn on homing system, which searches for targets and missile flight controls before hitting the target.

After approaching the target at a distance of about 2 km infrared seeker begins to search for the target. This process takes about 2 seconds, automatic processes up to 30 frames per second. An interesting feature of the missile seeker is able to search LOGIR goals predetermined by the operator. To do this before starting the rocket is loaded into memory signature targets obtained using equipment of the aircraft carrier or third-party tools of exploration. Automatic compares the visible objects with the available memory and selects the specified target. This guidance should ensure the accuracy of hitting better than 3 m.

Used guidance system not only distinguish rocket LOGIR other similar ammunition on the basis of "Hydra-70", but also give it an advantage in performing a number of combat missions. Infrared seeker, unlike laser, does not require third-party target designation from the board or management of the aircraft. Thus, the project LOGIR fully implemented the principle was "launched-and-forget" that the corresponding effect on the combat capabilities of the missile.

For several reasons, the development of the project LOGIR delayed. Tests of a new ammunition started only at the end of the last decade. It is known that Korean experts tested missiles new model under different conditions and using different platforms carrier. So, launches were conducted with helicopters and special ground launchers. Shelled various targets, including moving.

According to official data, guided missile LOGIR has several features that could affect its future. The main advantage of this product - low cost. It has been argued that the control unit LOGIR worth no more than 5-7 thousand dollars. In addition, the new missile is fully compatible with all existing launchers for unguided munitions Hydra 70. As a result, the carrier rockets LOGIR may be airplanes and helicopters of various types of US and international development. Finally, the rocket, working on the principle of "Run-and-forget" should have a high combat effectiveness.

According to reports, the project is now at the stage LOGIR prototype testing. Details and timing of completion of the tests are unknown. Likely in the foreseeable future new guided missile will be put into service in South Korea and join the arsenals of the Air Force and naval aviation. In addition, the previously mentioned the possibility of creating a land missile system. There is evidence of the development version of the complex LOGIR, intended to be mounted on light boats. This technique can also be put into service.
