Aussie jihad fighter in Syria dreams of Coco Pops



A MAN claiming to be an Aus­tralian jihadist in Syria says he will fight back if his group is attacked by the Australian Defence Force.

He has also backed the Islamic State terrorist group’s practice of beheading prisoners.

In a television interview run on the Seven Network last night, the man using the nom de guerre Abu Ousama indicated that the foreign fighters were aware the RAAF was operating in the region, though the Abbott government has so far limited airstrikes to Iraq.

“If they are going to come in and fire missiles and kill innocents, then how could anyone ?” he said. “You’re forced.”

He insisted Australia had nothing to fear from him if he were ­allowed to come home.

The man told a freelance journalist who interviewed him in northern Syria that he was “born, raised a true blue Aussie”.

“There is no hatred between me and Australia,” he said. “Actually, you know, home’s home. Everybody’s got to love their country.”

He said he was a brigade combat medic in a 1000-strong group calling itself Jund al-Aqsa, which was made up largely of foreign fighters and allied with Islamic State.

He said the group was independent of Islamic State but he supported its beheadings and ideology. “Some people might call them barbaric,” he said. “But what is the difference between a missile which hits into a house and kills 15 kids compared to a man dying, getting cut by the throat?

“ISIS has taken the role of protecting the innocent Muslims of this country. They have to do what they need to do to make their state.”

When not fighting, the man said he worked in a local hospital.

Asked what he missed about Australia, he responded: “I’d pay 500 Syrian pounds just to have some Coco Pops.”
