Russian navy claims to have driven away what was believed to be a U.S. submarine that entered the country's northern waters.

Russian state news agencies on Saturday cited an unidentified representative of the navy's general staff as saying the incident occurred Thursday in the Barents Sea, which lies off northwest Russia and is home to the navy's Northern Fleet.

The reports said the fleet sent several vessels and an anti-submarine Il-38 aircraft to expel the foreign submarine, presumed to be a U.S. Navy Virginia-class vessel.

A U.S. Defense official, speaking on condition of anonymity, could not confirm the incident and had no comment on the Russian claim.

'An anti-submarine attack group and an Ilyushin Il-38 anti-submarine aircraft were sent to the said area to search and track the sub,' the Russian navy spokesman was quoted by Interfax news agency as saying.

'The Northern Fleet anti-submarine forces' active maneuvers expelled the submarine from the Russian Federation's boundary waters.'

According to the unnamed Russian fleet spokesman, contact with the submarine lasted for 27 minutes before the vessel left the area.

The source added that this is only the latest incident involving foreign submarines entering the Barents Sea - encroachments that in the past had resulted in 'dangerous navigational incidents,' according to RT.com.

The Russian official partially blamed the sinking of the Kursk submarine in 2000, which left all 118 crew members dead, on a collision with American nuclear sub Toledo,

Today's report from Russia could be the latest sign of increasing tensions between Moscow and Washington over the crisis in Ukraine
