A commercial jetliner carrying 116 people disappeared over west Africa after losing contact with air traffic controllers, a Spanish charter company said Thursday. The Air Algerie aircraft vanished from radar about 50 minutes after it took off from Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, while flying to the Algiers, according to the Algerian Press Service. In a statement, Madrid-based Swiftair confirmed it had chartered the jet. It said 100 passengers and six crew were aboard Flight AH5017. The incident comes in the wake of the Malaysia Airlines MH17 was shot down over Ukraine last Thursday while a TransAsia flight crash-landed on a Taiwanese island killing 48 people on Wednesday.
MADRID, July 24 (Reuters) - Spanish private airline company Swiftair on Thursday said it had lost contact with one of its airplane operated by Air Algerie with 110 passengers and six crew members on board.
The company said in a notice posted on its website that the aircraft took off from Burkina Faso at 0117 local time and was supposed to land in Algiers at 0510 local time but never reached its destination.
