Shenyang J-16 & Su-30MKI ; Fighter Rivalry Continues.
Shenyang J-16 and Su-30MKI: fighter rivalry continues

Comparison of military equipment in different countries is interesting but ambiguous occupation. A simple comparison of the stated characteristics, by definition, can not lead to the correct answer to the question, whose technique is best because it does not take into account a lot of important factors (the role of technology in the structure of the troops, her people skills managers, etc.). Nevertheless, continue to emerge and new comparison. A few days ago a Chinese military portal Mil.news.sina.com.cn published his version of the comparison of two modern aircraft.

Attention of the authors of the portal attracted two largest aircraft Asia: China and India. The task they did a comparison of the Indian Su-30MKI and the latest Chinese Shenyang J-16. China and India are fighting for leadership in the Asian region, and the Su-30MKI and J-16 are the latest combat aircraft of the Air Force. According to the Chinese authors, the comparison of these two planes may be of great interest.

Not wasting time on a general description of the two planes, the authors of the portal Mil.news.sina.com.cn noted that Chinese fighter Shenyang J-16 has two major advantages over the Indian competitor. The first of them - avionics. Chinese J-16 aircraft carries onboard radar (radar) equipped with active phased array (AESA). Open from foreign sources that radar aircraft J-16 has an antenna diameter of about 1 meter from 2000 transceiver modules. Maximum power antenna - 6 kW, average - 2 kW. Su-30MKI Russian and Indian assembly, in turn, carry the N011 radar "Bars" with a passive phased array. Maximum power station "Bars" also is 6 kilowatts, but the average power is at a level of 1 kW.

Based on the differences in capacities and types of antennas, Chinese authors conclude superiority fighter J-16. However, they note the importance of excellence in the average output power. This means that the Chinese J-16 aircraft will be able to detect the Indian Su-30MKI before they enter the controlled area and get some tactical advantage.

The second important feature of the aircraft Shenyang J-16 called his armor, namely missiles "air-» PL-10. It is alleged that the missile has a fighting benefits generated by infrared homing head with a resolution of 128x128, its high sensitivity, the engine thrust vector control and other design features. With all this missile PL-10 can reliably hit aerial targets of different types, and also protected against interference.

Authors portal Mil.news.sina.com.cn recognize that the Indian Su-30MKI has not only disadvantages but also advantages. Its main advantage is called canards. Thanks to him, the Russian fighter design has higher performance characteristics, primarily better handling and maneuverability. However, additional plane significantly increase the visibility of the aircraft for radar stations.

An interesting feature of fighters Shenyan J-16 and Su-30MKI is their "origin". Both of these aircraft are in fact the development of the Soviet / Russian Su-27 fighter, which is why have some common features. For example, because of the double cab Chinese and Indian fighters about a ton heavier than the "base" of the Su-27, which accordingly affects their thrust-weight ratio. Notes that FWS-10 engines and AL-31FP (two on each plane) provide approximately the same fighter thrust augmentor at 25 tons

Specific combination of takeoff weight and engine thrust affects the volumes of both planes and ammunition, as a consequence, their combat effectiveness. However, such disadvantages are common and are unlikely to affect the outcome of the comparison. In the context of the thrust-weight ratio and engine are also referred to the prospects of development of the two fighters. According to the authors website Mil.news.sina.com.cn, for a noticeable increase in the Chinese characteristics of the aircraft engine shall be thrust with afterburner at 14 that also mentions the project "Super Dry", in which the new, and then available the troops Su-30MKI fighters can get a new radar with active phased array antenna and more powerful engines.

China and India are fighting for the title of regional leader and tactical aviation (in particular J-16 fighters and Su-30MKI) are one of the tools in this struggle. Therefore, as the authors note, the development of aircraft and their rivalry will continue.

Comparison of the two aircraft conducted portal Mil.news.sina.com.cn, is of some interest. However, this "analysis" features Chinese and Indian fighter was not without guile, than any peculiar art of its own production to overseas. As far as is known, the Su-30MKI and Shenyang J-16, as the different options of the Su-27 have approximately the same size and weight characteristics. The same can be said of the famous flight characteristics: maximum speed of both aircraft reaches 2,100 km / h, range - up to 3000 km.

Street fighter armament consists of two one automatic cannon 30 mm, and for the suspension of missiles and bombs used 12 knots under the wing and fuselage. The total weight of the suspended arms - up to 8 tons. Planes can carry guided and unguided missile and bomb armament of various types used in the Air Force China or India.

Notable differences between the two aircraft are on-board radio-electronic equipment. As already mentioned, the Chinese fighter equipped with radar AFAR, whereas Indian station uses a passive phased array. With this Chinese J-16 should have a high performance detection and tracking of targets. However, the exact ratio of the two characteristics of radar for obvious reasons unknown.

For consideration by another feature comparison of the two aircraft should recall a similar story from the recent past. In 2012, the Chinese press has the latest comparison based fighter Shenyang J-15 with the Russian Su-33, which is considered the "ancestor" of Chinese cars. Then argued that the Chinese J-15 a number of characteristics is not inferior, and in some cases even exceed the Russian fighter. Indeed, the Chinese aircraft designer managed to create a carrier-based fighter, comparable in its capabilities with the Soviet / Russian Su-33. However, Su-33 first flew in August 1987. Chinese J-15 made its first flight in late summer 2009. Thus, China's aviation industry was able to repeat the successes of the Soviet colleagues two decades ago. This also explains the superiority of the J-15 over the Su-33.

Su-30MKI was created by "Dry" commissioned Indian Air Force in the mid-nineties. Su-30MKI prototype flew in 1996. In the 97th customer received the first production fighter new model. Fighters for the Indian Air Force built the Russian and Indian (under license) aviation industry. To date, the military got about two hundred aircraft. By the end of the decade their number should increase to 270.

On the existence of a Chinese fighter Shenyang J-16 became known in mid-2012. In camera lenses got one of the prototypes of the aircraft. For since then, the Chinese aviation industry has completed testing and development of the fighter, and also started its mass production. Earlier this year, reported the existence of at least 24 new aircraft models. Apparently, J-16 has started serving in the armed forces.

Thus, the two aircraft shared fifteen years that can tell a lot about the trends of the aviation industry in Russia, India and China. First of all, it shows that China is still lagging behind its competitors, although it is taking constant attempts to catch up with them. Unfortunately, the lack of information about the latest Chinese fighter does not allow to speak confidently about the real balance of features and capabilities of aircraft between the two countries. However, it should be noted that the Indian Su-30MKI fighters, despite the use of radar without AESA and no missiles PL-10 level, have an undeniable numerical advantage.

China in the near future will try to get rid of the backlog from the quantitative point of view with the mass production of new technology. It's now known as India responds to this step. The modernization program "Super Dry" should improve the characteristics of existing and planned construction of Su-30MKI.

Opinion of the authors of the portal Mil.news.sina.com.cn on-board electronics or two armed fighters ambiguous. Can agree with him, but you can deny it. Nevertheless, Chinese authors have made the right conclusion. India and China, claiming to be a regional leader, not going to abandon development of its air force as a whole and frontal aviation in particular. This means that the competition will continue fighters.

Salam.
