Some words in English are frequently mispronounced (even native speakers of the language MAY mispronounce them). Here are the words (the list is not exhaustive. If you have more, please share):


- Awry \ə-ˈrī\ with the last syllable rhyming with "try"

- Geoduck \ˈgü-ē-ˌdək\ not "jio dak"

- Preface/surface \-fəs\. The second syllable does not rhyme with "face"

- Doubt \'daut\ and debt \'det\ have no "b" sound. It's called "silent b"

- Receipt \ri-ˈsēt\ has no "p" sound hence "silent p"

- Mortgage \'mor-gij\ has no "t" sound

- Subpoena \sə-ˈpē-nə\ has no "b" sound

- Hiccough/hiccup \ˈhi-(ˌ)kəp\

- Victual \'vi-təl\ has no "k" sound

- Hyperbole \hī-ˈpər-bə-(ˌ)lē\

- Epitome \i-'pi-tə-mē\

- Draught is chiefly the British variant of "draft". The same pronunciation \'draft,  'dräft\
