3 new Naval helicopters arrive

AN Anglo-Italian firm has brought in three of five multi-purpose naval helicopters which are expected to complement the operations of two Hamilton-class cutters acquired from the United States.

Lt. Rommel Rodriquez, spokesman of the Navy’s Philippine Fleet, said the aircraft arrived at the Villamor Air Base in Pasay City last Sunday and are being assembled, prior to the formal turnover to the Navy.

Rodriguez said there is still no definite date as to when the aircraft will be commissioned but said the target is within the month.

Rodriguez said the two other helicopters will be delivered next year.

The Department of National Defense awarded the P1.33-billion contract last March to the Anglo-Italian manufacturer AgustaWestland for the supply of the AW 109 aircraft.

Rodriquez said a team from the Naval Air Force has undergone training to fly the aircraft.

“Our pilots trained in Italy with these aircraft for about six months. They had to undergo the entire pilot training,” he said.
