The US Navy (USN) accepted delivery of its ninth San Antonio-class amphibious transport dock ship on 18 October, Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) officials announced.
Ingalls Shipbuilding, a division of Huntington Ingalls Industries (HII), handed over Somerset (LPD 25) to the Navy following completion of acceptance trials that included three days of at-sea testing in the Gulf of Mexico for the USN's Board of Inspection and Survey (INSURV).
Somerset is expected to commission on 1 March 2014 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The ship is named after the Pennsylvania county where one of the hijacked airliners crashed on 11 September 2001.
The final two San Antonio-class ships, John P Murtha (LPD 26) and Portland (LPD 27), are under construction at Ingalls' Pascagoula, Mississippi, shipyard. They are expected to complete in 2016 and 2017 respectively.
