Homophones are words which are spelled differently but pronounced identically. There are quite many words which are homophonous:
• To – too – two
• Sent – scent – cent
• Colonel – kernel
• Pail – pale (usually words ending with –ail and –ale are pronounced
identically)
• Bizarre – bazaar
• Way – weigh
• Coarse – course
• Coo – coup
• Deer – dear
• Doe – dough
• Groan – grown
• Idle – idol
• Whirled – world
• Time – thyme (it’s a bit surprising that thyme can be pronounced with
the normal “t’ instead of “ɵ” (as in thin, through, thick etc))
• Steal – steel
• Side – sighed
• Lo – low (please note that “low” and “law” don’t rhyme)
• Marshal – martial
• Mare – mayor
