AFFIRMATIVE ACTION: A WISE DECISION OR A CATASTROPHE
Good day everyone
Due to my boondoggle holidays,I'd like to share something about affirmative action to all of u guys..Hope you could get something from it
Affirmative action consists of two words: Affirmative and action. Affirmation itself, for me, is referring to the state of agreeing something and action itself, for me, is referring to an execution of a plan. Surmising those words, I can conclude that affirmative action, literally, means an execution of a plan about something that will give an impact to societies which have been agreed by most civilians in those societies. Regardless my own definition, affirmative action is referring to a legal policy which is considering characteristics such as race, ethnic ,national origin, color, religion, and even sex in order to benefiting low financial, minority, or underrepresented groups. It is also renowned by the name of “positive” discrimination because this policy contents physical and unchangeable elements of an individual which are becoming the main aspect to possess more benefits or simply said that minorities act as the beneficiary groups. The benefits that I stated before are including several important yet crucial areas which are differ from one country with another country depends on the current condition of the country. Those areas cover education, employment, government recruitment system, financial shares, and even the rights to own properties. The main objective of this action is vary depends on what area that’s been covered but generally is to form an equal relationship between the majorities and the minorities.

In government recruitment system for example, affirmative action is applied to create an equally divided human resources distribution whereas not merely the majorities have the rights for decision making agenda but also including the minorities or the under-represented group that also have equal rights to intervene the decision if maybe some parts of the decision cast drawbacks to their groups, ergo, the decision will not merely benefited the majorities.
In employment, affirmative action is applied by the establishment of lower or easier pre requisites than the standard prerequisites for certain ethnics, races, or any other individual characteristics. The main purpose is to create a well-distributed employees which are not only recruiting the majorities that are assumed possessing better skills but also the minorities that are assumed possessing lower skills than the majorities. This logic based on the fact that majorities have a larger chance to derive better skills because they’ve been granted a better education which comes with a high expense whereas the minorities has a lower chance to get a high and better yet expensive education, hence, the minorities are assumed possessing lower skills. A chain reaction of this affirmative action is to cut the number of poverty and jobless people where in fact is dominated by minorities group. A good example to describe this action in employments could clearly see in India where there are job reservations for certain low castes in order to form equally distributed human resources which is including all castes in India.
In education, affirmative action is in form that similar with what’s been mentioned before. Lowering the standard prerequisites for entering famous and prestigious schools and universities for certain group of society is how affirmative action is applied in education and this has been applied in Britain and North America. The main reason which is grounding this action is similar with the previous reason which is because of the imbalances of skills between majorities and minorities.

Unique areas that’s been covered by affirmative action are financial shares and properties reservations which are applied in Malaysia. According to some articles, there is a policy in Malaysia where every companies that operating in that country must set aside 30% (an enormous percentage, I must say) of its shares for ethnic Malays, also, discounts on real estate and reserved places at public universities and in civil-service jobs are the form of affirmative actions that have been applied in Malaysia for so many years.

Retrospecting all explanations and examples from several countries considering about affirmative action, Is it possible to establish this kind of action into a legal policy which will be applied in several areas in Indonesia? For example, in education we can apply affirmative action in enrollment of new students in universities or schools where the local people are given lower requirements or prerequisites in hope that those local people have an equal chance so that they able to build their own area in many aspects. Another example can be derived from our neighbor, Malaysia, where we’re applying a new contract for companies that attempt to set their feet in a certain area in Indonesia which is to set aside a bigger percentage of their profits to the local people. The last example is more specific which is to create privileges for Indonesians which are located in remote areas such as Papua. Those privileges can be in any forms like job or education reservations or maybe, just like what I’ve been stated before, lowering the prerequisites standard to be accepted in prestigious universities or to get a job. Does it make any sense? Give me ur best contentions regarding to this issue, thanks: D
