DTM (Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters) merupakan salah satu kejuaraan balap mobil turing yang telah lama dikenal dan cukup bergengsi di Jerman. Dahulu ajang ini dinamakan Deutsche Tourenwagen Meisterschaft pada musim 1984 sampai musim 1996. Kompetisi sempat vakum selama 3 musim hingga pada musim 2000 DTM kembali muncul dengan regulasi baru dan konsep desain mobil yang lebih modern.

The most important changers in the regulations for 2013

DRS: the Drag Reduction System (DRS) is a system that allows the drivers to adjust the rear wing from the cockpit during the race and thus increase their top speed. When a DTM driver is within two seconds from another driver in front of him on the main straight, his car will get a signal from the marshalling system from race control. The ECU of DTM partner Bosch informs the driver about the possibility to use DRS by means of a display and allows for the system to be enabled at the same time. Within the next lap, DRS can be activated once. By means of pneumatic technology, the angle of the control rear wing will be positioned 15 degrees more flat, speed of the car on the straight wil increase by five to seven km/h. In the first three and the final three laps of the race, as well as the first three laps after a safety car intervention, the system may not be used. The fan can clearly identify for which driver DRS has been enabled: the lateral endplates of the wing are moving, clearly visible, together with the rear wing.

Option tyres: the option tyre is a tyre by DTM tyre partner Hankook that stands out from the regular DTM tyre for a softer rubber compound and allows for lap times that are 1 to 1.5 seconds faster for a certain period of time. After this time, lap times are getting considerably worse. Every driver will get one set of these tyres for the race only, which he has to use once. Within the first three and the final three laps of the race, no mandatory tyre changes are allowed. Spectators can identify the option tyre by means of a yellow marking on the tyre wall.

Tyre choice: in the race, drivers can decide freely with which tyres they want to start, the option tyre or the standard tyre. However, this decision has to be made and adhered to already after qualifying on Saturday.

Parc fermé: in the 2013 season, work on the cars between qualifying and the race is strictly regulated. Warm-up on Sunday has been abandoned. After qualifying, cars are subject to parc fermé rules. Under surveillance of the DMSB, only limited maintenance work, determined before, can be carried out. In case additional work is required, this has to be applied for, but results into penalties, e.g. a start from the pit lane.

Test phase finished, the season can start

The test sessions have been concluded, countdown for the DTM season opener at the Hockenheimring Baden-Württemberg on May 5th is running. For four days, the teams from Audi, BMW and Mercedes-Benz had their cars running in the second and final official ITR test at Hockenheim. Now, they have three weeks to analyse the final data and prepare their cars for the first encounter of the season.

Next to Jamie Green, who has changed from Mercedes-Benz to Audi, the test session was particularly important for the four rookies in the most popular international touring car series: ex-Formula 1 driver Timo Glock and his fellow BMW driver Marco Wittmann, as well as Formula 3 champion Daniel Juncadella and Pascal Wehrlein at Mercedes-Benz. They racked up countless kilometres and acquired valuable experience in their new environment, also in the rain. On three of the eight test days that were held in total at Barcelona and Hockenheim, Wittmann set the fastest time of the day.

All 22 drivers also used the opportunity to get used to the technical innovations for the 2013 season. This year, drivers have new tactical possibilities at their disposal because of the Drag Reduction System (DRS) and the Hankook option tyres. These two new features are to make the DTM races even more exciting and with more variety.

On Friday, Augusto Farfus set the final fastest time of the day prior to the start of the season with his BMW M3 DTM in 1:32.976 minutes, followed by his fellow BMW drivers Bruno Spengler (1:33.189 minutes) and Timo Glock (1:33.320 minutes). Christian Vietoris was classified fourth with his DTM Mercedes AMG C-Coupé and a lap time of 1:33.453 minutes. On the final day, Mike Rockenfeller was the best-placed driver of an Audi RS 5 DTM in sixth place (1:33.630 minutes).

Farfus’s fastest time also was the outright fastest time in the aggregation of all the Hockenheim test days. The fastest Audi driver of the week was Miguel Molina on Wednesday, the fastest Mercedes-Benz driver was Vietoris on the final day. Glock racked up the longest distance on Friday: 653.796 kilometres on a total of 143 laps, more than any other driver during this week.
