Singapore, Malaysia kick off ASEAN Trading Link


KUALA LUMPUR - The trading link between seven South-east Asia stock exchanges kicked off yesterday with the connection of the Singapore and Malaysia bourses.

And, next month, the Stock Exchange of Thailand will join Singapore Exchange and Bursa Malaysia on the ASEAN Trading Link, according to a statement from ASEAN Exchanges. Together, the three markets will offer nearly 3,000 listed companies with a market value of US$1.4 trillion (S$1.7 trillion), accounting for about 70 per cent of the total market capitalisation of the 10-member Association of South-east Asian Nations.

"The three markets - Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand - serve as the foundation of the ASEAN Trading Link, providing a single-entry-point access to three of the largest stock markets" in the initiative, Bursa Malaysia chief executive Tajuddin Atan said. DOW JONES
