"Stop Hunger Now" Campaign Aims To Feed Hungry And Reduce Crime

Augusta, GA -- According to the FBI, nearly 15,000 people were murdered in 2010 and more than 500 of those were in Georgia.

Here locally, Richmond County has had 18 murders as of July, 27 murders in 2011 and 35 homicides in 2010.

But one local college is doing its part to raise awareness to combat violence in the community.

Students and faculty at Augusta State hope to collect 14,748 cans by Wednesday night for Stop Hunger Now.

That number represents the number of people murdered in 2010 across the country.

“I think when you see something visually, you may only be person but can make a difference whether its hunger, murder rate or reporting violence that’s next door and helping someone else,” said Co-Chair of Stop Hunger Now, Pam Lightsey.

Organizers say they have collected things like pennies or paper clips in the past but figured canned goods would help the needy and remind us visually about the impact that violence brings.

This weekend – hundreds of volunteers will package meals at ASU on Saturday.

“Stop Hunger Now is aimed towards the children. We are trying to get children in the school with hot meals, and more than 1 million kids go without a meal so we’re trying to make sure that doesn’t happen,” said Lightsey.

Local area rotary clubs hope to raised $25,000 in donations. Each ‘Stop Hunger Now’ meal costs only 25 cents.

“From what we have seen on the international side - kids go to school just to get a hot meal. On the local efforts, we are raising money for the backpack program through Golden Harvest Food Bank,” said Lightsey.
