The scope of the Russian attack appears to be massive. Ukraine’s interior ministry reported that the country was under attack from cruise and ballistic missiles, with Russia appearing to target infrastructure near major cities such as Kyiv, Kharkiv, Mariupol and Dnipro.

Explosions from artillery rockets lit up the night sky as shelling began near Mariupol, video showed. A senior adviser to Ukraine’s interior ministry said that it appeared Russian troops may soon move on Kharkiv, which is about 20 miles from the border, and the Black Sea port of Odesa in an amphibious landing. Locals in Kyiv sought safety in bomb shelters as explosions were heard outside the city.

“Putin has just launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine,” said Ukrainian foreign minister Dmytro Kuleba. “Peaceful Ukrainian cities are under strikes. This is a war of aggression. Ukraine will defend itself and will win. The world can and must stop Putin. The time to act is now.”

In a bid to justify the attack, Putin claimed “A hostile anti-Russia is being created on our historic lands.”

Explosions Erupted In Cities Across Ukraine After Putin Said Russia Was Launching A Military Operation

As the sun rose to reveal plumes of smoke in the distance, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Twitter that Russia was attacking military installations across the country but that residents shouldn't panic as Ukrainian forcers launched their own defensive measures.

Ukraine's Interior Ministry said the border was attacked by Russian troops from Russia and Belarus at about 5 a.m. via artillery, heavy equipment, and small arms, adding that it did not yet know about any casualties.

The escalation of military action comes days after Putin defied world leaders and ordered Russian troops into Eastern Ukraine, putting thousands of lives in danger. In the predawn hours of Thursday, BuzzFeed News journalists reported large explosions in the eastern city of Kramatorsk and near Kharkiv, the second-largest city in Ukraine. There were other reports of explosions near the country’s capital of Kyiv, including at the Boryspil International Airport, as video of flashes and audio clips were posted on social media.

Ukraine is under attack from Belarus as well as Russia, border guards tell AFP.

Troops are entering Ukraine from a border crossing with Belarus, CNN reports.

The CNN report is based on footage from a livestream of a camera in the area.

The outlet says troops are entering at the Senkivka, Ukraine crossing with Veselovka, Belarus.

Tens of thousands of Russian troops are in Belarus.

The military exercises by Russia in Belarus were supposed to end last weekend but Minsk then announced that the troops would remain to carry out more maneuvers for an unspecified duration.

The Ukrainian capital of Kyiv lies just 150 kilometers (90 miles) south of the Belarusian border, while the northern Ukrainian city of Chernigiv is a mere 60 kilometers (40 miles) east of Belarus.
