The Philippine National Police (PNP) on Thursday said security plans are set in case protests hit major government establishments like what happened in Nepal and Indonesia.
In an ambush interview, PNP acting chief Police Lieutenant General Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. was asked how prepared the police organization is for these possible situations.
“We have readied our security plans for dispersal, crowd management, and security. Mayroon na tayong security plans that have been set,” Nartatez said.
(We have readied our security plans for dispersal, crowd management, and security. We have security plans that have been set.)
“We have also our information na puwede nating pagtuunan or itong information na ito, this is the basis for any operation,” he added.
(We also have our information that we can focus on or this information is the basis for any operation.)
According to Nartatez, the PNP is continuously monitoring the peace, order, and safety across the country.
In a separate statement, the National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) also said that its personnel are ready to handle the protest actions across Metro Manila.
“The NCRPO assures the public that we are fully prepared to maintain peace, order, and security amid the ongoing and upcoming protest actions across Metro Manila,” the NCRPO said.
“While we exercise maximum tolerance, we will not allow any violation of the law,” it added.
The NCRPO pointed out that the rights to assemble and express must be carried “without endangering public safety or disrupting community life”
“Security measures have been set to prevent untoward incidents such as clashes, vandalism, and traffic disruptions, while ensuring that the rights of all are safeguarded,” the NCRPO said.
“We appeal to all participants to conduct their activities with discipline and respect for the law,” it added.
Several protests have been conducted in the country in the past days over reports of corruption in the government’s flood control projects while many areas in the country have been submerged from heavy rains.
In Nepal, Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli on Tuesday resigned as protests against corruption intensified with demonstrators storming the parliament complex and setting the homes of some politicians on fire.
In Indonesia, political parties nearly two weeks ago agreed to revoke a number of perks and privileges for parliamentarians in a bid to calm anti-government protests. —VAL, GMA Integrated News
