Chinese robotics startup EngineAI shared footage of its robots dancing like “Axe Gang” from the movie Kunfu Hustle.
In the video, the Axe Gang Trainee is the Shenghen-based firm’s PM01 humanoid robot. After intense dance battles with pro choreographers, PM01 flawlessly executes every Kung Fu Hustle move.
“Now, We’re back with new actions—this time merging hardcore robotics with Hong Kong cinema nostalgia in a way that’s making engineers and movie fans scream encore,” reads the video description.
In February, the firm shared footage of PM01 successfully performing a frontflip, making it the first humanoid robot to do so.
Robot meets cinema
Following its viral front-flip stunt last month, EngineAI has pushed the boundaries of robotics by integrating advanced motion algorithms with cinematic choreography.
PM01’s movements were perfected through dance battles with professional choreographers, achieving 0.01-second precision in joint control for dynamic flips, force-controlled arms for fluid motion, and up to 24 degrees of freedom for an eerily accurate walking gait.
According to the firm, the fusion of robotics and Hong Kong cinema nostalgia has captivated engineers and film fans alike.
Launched in December 2024, the PM01 is a smaller version of the SE01, Engine AI’s flagship humanoid known for its realistic walking gait. The company drew global attention in October 2024 with a demo of SE01’s lifelike movement.
PM01 is now available for sale until March 31, 2025, offering developers, researchers, and businesses an opportunity to explore the future of robotics.
The robot’s business and education versions are priced at ¥88,000 (around $12,000), making them $3K cheaper than Unitree’s G1 humanoid.
Agile AI assistant
The PM01 is a compact humanoid robot designed for researchers exploring human-robot integration. The highly customizable humanoid offers two walking modes and advanced motion capture, letting it effortlessly adapt to any environment.
It features a highly interactive core screen, a bionic design for realistic movement, and an impressive 320-degree waist rotation. Built with an aluminum alloy exoskeleton, it balances durability with agility.
Standing 1.38 meters (4.5 feet) tall and weighing 88 pounds (40 kilograms), the PM01 is 27 centimeters shorter and 8 kilograms (17.6 pounds) lighter than EngineAI’s full-sized SE01.
A recent video highlights its advanced visual perception, powered by an Intel RealSense depth camera. Its dual-chip system, combining NVIDIA Jetson Orin and Intel N97 CPUs, delivers high-performance computing for complex tasks. The PM01 includes a high-capacity, quick-release battery, delivering up to two hours of operation per charge.
EngineAI’s PM01 and SE01 humanoid robots are drawing attention for their agility and advanced capabilities. These AI-powered robots are showcased in training, assisting police officers, and engaging with the public. Shenzhen’s police department is reportedly testing PM01 units as part of a project integrating artificial intelligence into law enforcement.
The company plans to produce and sell over 1,000 units by 2025, with the PM and PA series designed for home and industrial use, highlighting its ambitious vision for the future.
