The game is quite a looker.
From Blizzard Entertainment’s Diablo III and to Grinding Gear Game’s Path of Exile, the Action RPG has a few heavyweights, but relatively few high-profile releases in recent years. However, Lost Ark Online looks to join the ranks of these titles with a few interesting additions of its own.
The game itself is being created in Korea, by developers called Smilegate. As of yet, there is no confirmed release date for anywhere outside of Korea, of which it is supposed to be released in 2015.
As the main webpage is written in Korean (who would have thought?) information is somewhat sparse, but what can be gleaned from the official website and other places around the internet is still enough to get us at TechRaptor intrigued.
The game has 18 classes, of which named so far are the Battle Master, Devil Hunter, Arcana, Warlord, Infighter, Summoner, and the Beserker.
The game is an MMORPG, so the game will automatically feature players working together for the greater good, with a world map that entices players to explore ‘Hidden Quests and Areas.’ You can also drink and gamble, which is of course mandatory in any MMO worth its salt, along with the opportunity to raid, dungeon, and fight players in PVP that features 1v1 or 3v3 battles.

Lost Ark, Smile Gate’s online hack ‘n’ slash RPG, looked impressive when it debuted earlier this week, but a new, 20 minute extended trailer coming out of G-Star reveals just how massive and ambitious the Korean ARPG is. Adventurers can explore the ocean in ships or compete in drinking contests and PvP, all while fighting the Demon Legion of Kazaroth, whatever that is.
The first part of the trailer spills the beans on just a few of Lost Ark’s intriguing classes.
There’s the Battle Master, a fast warrior with devastating air combos; the Devil Hunter, an agile gunslinger who can switch between dual pistols, shotguns and rifles; the Arcana, a mage who uses cards to cast spells, selected from a roulette wheel; the tanky, mechanical lance-wielding Warlord; the Infighter, a martial artist with a penchant for explosive magic; another caster, the Summoner, who commands animals and spirits while firing off devastating arcane attacks; and finally the Berserker, a bloke with a gargantuan sword who can carve up armies in a frenzy.
Surface deep, the classes are familiar, but each seems to have a hook that sets it apart from not just the other classes, but other ARPGs.
Lost Ark also boasts a novel ability customisation system, the Tripod system. Players can select an ability or spell, choose its affinity - which seems to be what type of damage it does, like fire, earth and so on - first, then its attack type, like if it’s an area of effect attack, and finally it can be upgraded, making it do damage to more enemies or have increased range.
While adventuring, it seems like players will face challenges and make decisions that seem out of place in a Diablo-like, which is by no means a bad thing. The trailer shows a player deciding whether to help an NPC who is dangling off a ledge, or simply kick him off. Then a chase is shown off, where a player runs and jumps across rooftops in an effort to catch a thief.
Players can team up to take on massive bosses wandering around the world, or go on dungeon romps where they can face truly gigantic monsters that require a special touch, like keeping them pinned down with chains fired from massive ballistas.
There’s more than fighting to do, however. There appears to be a focus on exploration, with characters able to climb cliffs, leap over huge gaps, and search for hidden secrets. Characters also have a two levels - one for battles and one for “life”, which applies to gathering skills such as archaeology, logging and mining. This combined with all the players running around gives it more than a hint of MMO.
Unlike most MMOs, though, where gathering supplies is competitive - with players racing to nodes - or set up so that each player gets their own node, Lost Ark’s gathering seems to encourage teamwork. Players can work together to chop down a massive tree, for instance.
Other diversions include a drinking game, where heroes guzzle down beer from barrels, and PvP scraps in the colosseum.
The game doesn’t just take place on dry land, either. You can bugger off on a ship to go fishing, find salvage or just explore. The ocean isn’t a peaceful place, though, and in the trailer we see a captain getting into a fight with a ghost ship by boarding it and carving up all the undead nasties.
It looks mighty impressive, but there’s no word on if it’s coming West. Cross all your digits. - PCgamesN
The Current Released Classes
Battle Master is a female monk who specializes in close range combat she can deliver devastating attacks and combos. However, don't let the hand to hand combat fool you. Battle Masters are very agile and their attacks can be used to chain combos, get out of sticky situations, or initiate combos. Lastly, she can execute special moves by consuming her elemental gauge.
The Devil Hunter is pretty much like Dante from the Devil May Cry series one bad ass hunter! This is the perfect class for advanced action MMORPG players because it will require players to real-time switch between dual pistols, shotgun, and rifle during mid combat. Each gun will have a different set of skills! Players can easily switch between the guns by pressing the (1) Dual Pistols, (2) Shotgun, and (3) Rifle keys on the keyboard. Mix and match combos from the various skill sets and use them to your advantage!
Arcana - Roulette System
Arcana is one of the many ranged DPS classes with gambling abilities and arcane magic. She plays a bit similar to Twisted Fate of League of Legends because she can spin the roulette for a random card. When the card is used, it will randomly give various skill boosts and effects to her default skills, completely change skill, etc.
The Warlord class really knows how to put the "Tank" class to use by wield a shield and portable lance cannon (It's really a rifle.) Gun Sword? Nope, not this class! Nothing that special about this class other than the Bullet System that is consumed when using explosive skills. For some reason this class reminds me of Lancers from Tera.
Infighter - Chi Energy
The Infighter is another melee combat class that specializes in dual red and green energy system. Unlike the other jobs, the Infighter doesn't have any mana bar at all and has to focus on skill management in another way. Her skills either consume the red energy or the green energy. The trailer didn't reveal much, but I am guessing that some skills will let her siphon red or green energy from enemies.
The Summoner is a fairly straightforward class, she can summon various monsters that will assist her in combat. The summoned monsters vary from channeled summons, summons that appear for one skill, summoned monsters that will protect you in combat, and more. A summoning orb is consumed every time a special summon is used while the others doesn't require any.
The Berserker class is the ultimate frontline AoE class delivering huge cleave attacks and given the ability to transform into a fiery rage state for one minute. Even though his armor looks heavy, this class can move and attack extremely fast. Berserkers can easily mow down large groups of enemies without a care.
Tripod System - Combo Variations
The Tripod System of Lost Ark Online plays a big role in the action combat because players can specialize their character to how they like. For example, the Battle Master can focus on strengthen in the element they like fire, ice, earth, etc. Upgrading the skill some more will increase the amount of times the skill can be executed or add. Of course, this only applies to the Battle Master class as the Tripod System varies between all of the playable classes and works in a unique way for each one. With the Tripod System in play users are able to customize their character to their own style. It's up to the player to discover which builds suits them the most and the various mix match combos that can be performed using the system.
World Map - Explore the World
Players can travel freely around the world of Lost Ark Online using their own ship as seen below and in the trailer. Players can set sail on random adventures and discover new areas or get lost on their ark. When you're out on the sea, you will also be able to visibly see other players ships exploring or looking for areas. Giving the game a more open MMORPG feel. You can even go treasure hunting in search of random treasure by using the ships crane. Sail far enough and you can discover various unique areas! Sailing the seas isn't always going to be safe like the random ghost ship appeared in the trailer video. Once you board the ghost ship, you can hunt the special boss for rare loot!
Interactive World - Hidden Quests and Areas
Lost Ark Online is an MMORPG and not MORPG so when players aren't in a dungeon, they're out on the field doing random stuff like life skills, hunting field bosses, hanging out in town, exploring new regions, and more. The game will have a lot of hidden areas and it doesn't stop there alone. The game also offers hidden quests. For example, you can eavesdrop on NPC's and listen to their schemes. From there a new quest will unlock where you can aid the or stop their plan. Another hidden or random quest is a falling off a ledge, you can kick him off or help him up, perhaps he will reward you for the troubles.
Lost Ark Open Areas - Field Adventures
Lost Ark Online offers Open Areas just like Lineage Eternal or Devilian Online. Seen in the trailer or set images below the amount of players in one areas isn't limited to a small party! In the last image you can find a bunch of players beating down on a field boss.
Some examples from the released video
and many more!
Mini Games - Drinking and Gambling
Inside the tavern, players can participate in mini games and events such as the card and keg drinking game shown below. It would be nice to see if they implemented a card system like Ragnarok Online and those cards could be used in the Tavern or against other players or for something else.
Raids - Guardian Raid System
The raid system in Lost Ark Online reminded me of Vindictus a lot especially when they decided to chain down the monster using the ballista. Players must approach raid bosses with a plan because this isn't one of those games where you can tank & spank stuff. Especially with the interactive world and areas the game has to offer. For example, the boss below can shatter the cold ice ground leaving large holes behind where players can slip and fall into and drown unless a team member saves them from their demise.
Dungeon System - Cinematic Experience
The cinematic dungeon experience is one of the main reasons why so many players around the world are interested in Lost Ark Online. As seen in the trailer the boss will chase your party down the dungeon and once you get to the top of the map, you can finally start slaying the beast. While climbing up the tower, the beast will randomly try to eat you alive so you must run fast and break or jump over obstacles.
PvP Arena - 1v1 and 3v3
It wouldn't be an MMORPG if it didn't offer some form of PvP right?! Lost Ark Online currently offers 1v1 and 3v3 in the Colosseum. Perhaps the developers are going to implement some open world PK later on for the hardcore players. Check out the PvP part of the game starting at 13:31 in the video.
